A Season of Service
Faith becomes visible when we put it into action.

October is one of the busiest months of the year for Council #1185, and it is also one of the clearest examples of what our organization is all about.

Over the next several weeks, our members will be working the Car Show, collecting during the annual Tootsie Roll Drive, preparing for the Whole Hog Sausage Dinner, supporting community events, caring for our Hall, and helping with countless other projects behind the scenes.

That work matters.

Service is not always something large or highly visible. Sometimes it is standing on a street corner for half an hour collecting donations. Sometimes it is preparing food, setting up tables, cleaning after an event, donating supplies, helping at church, or noticing something around the Hall that needs attention and stepping forward to help.

Every one of those acts contributes to something greater.

As fall arrives and our calendars fill, it can be easy to assume someone else will handle the work. But the strength of our Council, Columbia Anns, parish, and community has always come from people who choose to participate.

You do not have to attend every event or volunteer for every job. Just find a place where you can help. An hour of your time, a donated item, a good idea, or an extra set of hands can make a meaningful difference.

This month, may we continue to live our faith through action and remember that the work we do together allows us to serve far beyond the walls of our Hall.

Planning for the Future of Our Hall

A new Maintenance Committee will help identify needs, research costs, and provide better information for future decisions.

At the most recent Knights meeting, members discussed establishing a formal Maintenance Committee to help better identify and plan for the short- and long-term needs of our Hall and property.

The members currently nominated to serve on the committee are:

  • John Rogers
  • John Zeigler
  • Larry Krodinger

The committee will also include Grand Knight David Kennedy and Columbia Anns President Cathy Rogers as standing members.

The committee will begin meeting to develop a list of short-term and long-term needs and projects, along with estimated costs and potential sources of funding.

It is important to understand that the Maintenance Committee will not independently decide which projects will be completed or how much money will be spent.

Instead, the committee’s role will be to gather information, research costs, identify needs and opportunities, and present that information to the Knights and Columbia Anns. This will allow both organizations to make informed decisions and work toward a consensus on future projects and improvements.

The goal is to take a more organized and proactive approach to maintaining and improving our facility while also considering the financial resources available.

Members Are Encouraged to Participate

If you have an idea for a project that should be considered, see an area of the Hall that may need attention, or would like to serve on the Maintenance Committee, please contact one of the committee members.

Taking care of our Hall is a shared responsibility. Thoughtful planning today will help us protect and improve this important facility for our members and community for years to come.

Thank you,

Maintenance Committee

Helping Protect Our Hall

Our security system is an important tool in protecting Council property and keeping our grounds safe.

Recently, the exterior security cameras at the Hall recorded an individual placing approximately 10 bags of personal trash into our dumpster without authorization.

The individual has been identified and is being contacted. A formal warning will be issued advising that future unauthorized dumping may result in further action.

A few years ago, the Council upgraded the video surveillance system covering the Hall and surrounding grounds. The system was installed to help protect our members, guests, and property, and this recent incident is a good example of why that investment was important.

We ask all members to continue helping us look after the facility. If you notice suspicious activity or something that does not appear right around the Hall or grounds, please contact a Council officer. Security footage can be reviewed when necessary.

Thank you for helping us protect a facility that belongs to all of us.

Tootsie Roll Drive – October 17

Even 30 minutes of your time can help make a difference.

October is an extremely busy month at the Hall, but one important annual tradition still needs the support of our members.

The Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive will take place on Saturday, October 17. This statewide effort raises funds to support individuals with developmental disabilities. Half of the proceeds raised through our Council go to the Cardinal Glennon Knights of Columbus program, while Council #1185 traditionally directs our local portion to Pony Bird.

Main Street Collection

We will collect donations from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at two locations:

  • Main & Miller
  • Main & Boyd

In past years, just seven or eight dedicated members have covered these locations for the entire collection period. This year, we are asking more members to lend a hand.

Even 30 minutes would be greatly appreciated.

Members are also welcome to pair up and cover a corner together for a designated period. A sign-up sheet will be available in the Clubroom.

Help Needed After Masses

We will also collect donations following all weekend Masses at St. Rose.

  • Saturday – 5:00 p.m. Mass: Volunteer coordinator needed
  • Sunday – 7:30 a.m. Mass: Todd Milner
  • Sunday – 9:30 a.m. Mass: Dave Sprous
  • Sunday – 11:00 a.m. Mass: Greg Cobb

We still need someone willing to take responsibility for the Saturday 5:00 p.m. Mass.

If you can spare a few minutes after Mass to help collect donations, please let one of these Brother Knights know. Aprons, collection cans, and Tootsie Rolls will be available in the back of church.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this effort over the years. The Tootsie Roll Drive is a wonderful program that not only raises money for a worthy cause, but also brings attention to the work the Knights of Columbus does throughout our community..

Happy Fall, Y’all!

Although the temperatures don’t seem to have received the memo yet, fall is officially here — and we have a very busy few weeks ahead of us!

There are many exciting activities and events coming up, and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone get involved. Our organization is at its best when we work together, and every volunteer, donation, and helping hand is truly appreciated.

We also want to continue making our Hall and organization the best they can be. If you have suggestions for things you feel are needed around the Hall, improvements we should consider, or ideas that would benefit our members, please bring them forward. We want everyone to have an opportunity to contribute.

Thank you all for your continued support, participation, and willingness to lend a helping hand. I am truly looking forward to everything we have planned for the coming months.

Together, we can continue to make the Columbia Anns a strong, active, and welcoming organization.

Wishing you and your families a wonderful fall season. May God bless you and your families!

FAITH ANCHOR - Serving With Perseverance

Doing good is not always easy, but it is always worthwhile.

October is a busy month for our Council, parish, and community. With so many events, volunteer opportunities, and responsibilities, it can be easy to feel stretched thin.

That is why Galatians 6:9 is such a fitting reminder for this season:

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Faith calls us to keep showing up.

Sometimes service is rewarding in the moment. Other times, it means working behind the scenes, doing the same task again, or helping when we are already tired. Those moments matter too.

The good we do through our families, parish, Council, and community may not always produce immediate results, but every act of service plants a seed. A few minutes helping at an event, a donation to someone in need, a kind word, or simply being dependable can have an impact far beyond what we see.

This month, as our schedules fill and the work continues, let us remember that perseverance is part of service. We do not have to do everything, but we are each called to do something.

May we continue serving with willing hearts, trusting that God can use even our smallest efforts for something greater.

A Special Thank You from Knight’s Flight

As we near the end of the season, the Disc Golf Club would like to extend a huge thank-you to all of the volunteers who have helped throughout the year. From spotting during tournaments, serving meals, assisting with check-in, setup, and breakdown, to so many other tasks behind the scenes, your support has made a tremendous difference. Our volunteers truly set us apart from every other disc golf event, and your efforts are greatly appreciated by everyone who plays here.

We would especially like to recognize Dave and Terry Sprous for all they do — far too much to list — as well as Greg and Angie Cobb for faithfully manning the concession stand every Friday night during horseshoes.

Thank you all, and great job, everyone!
