Steel Magnolias is a 1989 American comedy drama starring Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, and Julia Roberts. The screenplay by Robert Harling is based on his 1987 play of the same name about the bond shared by a group of women in a small-town Southern community and the ways they cope with the death of one of their own.
Eye of the Needle is a 1981 British spy film starring Donald Sutherland and Kate Nelligan. It is based on the 1978 novel of the same title by Ken Follett. The film describes the experience of a German Nazi spy in the United Kingdom during World War II. The spy discovers vital information about the upcoming D-Day invasion and tries to return to Germany while he is stranded with a family on the isolated (fictional) Storm Island, off the coast of Scotland.

Since the Y’s Women have not visited the Glass House in several years, we have booked a two-hour walking tour of all five Philip Johnson-designed buildings on Friday, October 30, from 10:30-12:30. For those needing a walker or a cane, be aware that we will be walking on uneven ground and gravel during our visit. In addition, as our tour will be limited to 13 attendees, consider registering right away.
Designed in 1949, the Glass House sits on 49 wooded and secluded acres in New Canaan and remains to this day an icon of mid-century modern architecture. The first artist to be awarded the Pritzker Prize in Architecture, Philip Johnson lived at the Glass House with his partner David Whitney until his death at 91.
We’ll meet behind Wells Fargo Bank in Trader Joe’s parking lot at 9:15 am with a 9:30 departure.
The cost of the tour is $50 per person. To register, contact Jill Meyer at 226-4310 or via email and then mail your $50 check payable to Jill to 137 Lansdowne, Westport, CT 06880. Please indicate if you can drive, as drivers are always needed and appreciated. The gas contribution for each passenger is $6.
Following our tour, we’ll lunch at Ching’s Table, 64 Main Street, New Canaan, 972-8550.
Directions: Drive to the Merritt Parkway South, either by way of Compo Road North or the Connector. Take Exit 15 off the Merritt onto CT Rte. 123 North, New Canaan Road. Turn left onto Rte. 106 S/East Avenue, left onto Main Street, and right onto Elm Street. Our destination is the Park Street municipal parking lot (77 Main Street), which we can also access by turning right immediately after passing the building at 72 Park Street.
