Dear Residents,
As the leaves start to fall from the trees, and we enjoy the first crisp days of autumn, I hope that you will be able to enjoy some of the great events planned by our Recreation Department later this month. On October 17, the annual Fall Family Fun event will take place in Vassallo Park. On October 24, the Goblin Walk and Howl-o-ween Dog Parade will take place. More information on these events is included within this newsletter.
The Village Dept. of Public Works will begin their annual leaf collection program on Monday, November 2. The map showing the pickup dates for each street can be viewed here. Please, remember not to place leaf piles either in the street or blocking the sidewalk. If you use a landscaping service, please communicate this information to them. Leaves should be left within the grass strip between the sidewalk and the curb, or if you do not have a sidewalk, as close to the street as possible.
The Village Board of Trustees have scheduled a number of public hearings in the next few weeks. On October 21, 2026, a public hearing will be held on Local Law Introductory No. 7 of 2026, which will revamp the regulations on commercial and noncommercial signage in the Village. I, along with the Village Board, have worked closely with our Village Attorney and Village Planner to develop regulations that provide clear guidance to residents and business owners while taking recent court decisions on First Amendment rights into account. There will also be a public hearing on October 21 on Local Law Introductory No. 13 of 2026, which provides clarifications in the review of site development plans by the Planning Board. You are welcome to share your thoughts on one or both of these laws by attending the public hearing or submitting your comments in writing using our online comment form.
Updates on various projects and initiatives ongoing in the Village:
1. Maple Street Rapid Flashing Beacon Installation – The Village has received approval from NYSDOT to move forward with the installation of the rapid flashing beacon on Maple Street at Van Cortlandt Place/Wells Avenue. DPW has been working this week on the installation and the project should be completed by the end of the month.
2. Quaker Bridge - Westchester County has provided an update on the Quaker Bridge project. The project is on schedule to be completed next May. On the village side, the cofferdam has been fully installed and load pile drilling has begun. On the town side, the cofferdam installation is expected to be completed this week, with pile driving to begin thereafter. The project will continue throughout the winter to ensure it meets the scheduled completion date.
3. Brook Street Lot - DPW has begun clearing the vacant lot at the bottom of Brook Street to provide additional parking in the area. The goal is to clear some areas during the fall to provide additional off-street parking during the winter. In spring 2027, DPW will return to pave and stripe the area. A retaining wall will also be installed at the back of the property. It is expected that 20 spaces will be available in the lot, as opposed to the 8 or so available now.
4. Half Moon Bay Bridge Update - NYSDOT returned the plans, specifications and estimate with a few additional comments for our structural engineer. The firm will review these comments and provide a response to the DOT. We are hoping to have the bid go out later this fall for the bridge work. The Village Board, at their October 7 meeting, approved two agreements related to the funding of the project.
5. Gouveia Park - Work has resumed at Gouveia Park now that eagle season has officially ended. DPW crews have been working on the lower parking lot (near the house) and the new roadway that will exit onto Albany Post Road. Work will continue through the fall as long as weather conditions permit.
6. 1380 Albany Post Road - Revised building permits have been submitted to Engineering for the multifamily development at 1380 Albany Post Road. The Village Board approved a special permit for this property in 2022 and the Planning Board gave site plan approval later that year. The Village's third-party reviewer will be reviewing the revised plans to ensure they are responsive to the comments that were issued back in January 2025.
Please remember to check the Projects and Initiatives page of the Village website for updates on various other work being done. These pages are updated regularly as more information becomes available. As always, residents are welcome to contact me at bhealy@crotononhudson-ny.gov or 914-271-4848 with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Bryan T. Healy
