From the Pastor
Dear siblings in Christ,
As you read this, I am somewhere on the Canadian side of Lake Superior, closing out our Season of Creation in Christ by enjoying the heck out of the natural world. We are so blessed to live where we do and to have such magnificent evidence of God’s love for us and all God has made.
We are a busy parish, with many opportunities to serve and learn in our congregations and communities. Look for more of them to be outlined in this newsletter. But I hope we are never too busy to pause and give thanks. This month I have watched our people get together to support one another in times of personal crisis. I have seen an outpouring of interest in being better relatives to our neighbors at Red Cliff. And I am grateful for all the ways you show up in community with hospitality and grace.
In gratitude,
Pastor Connie

Reconciling in Christ Statement
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28
We welcome YOU to Bethesda and Immanuel to participate fully in our congregational life. You who may have experienced exclusion, injustice or racial inequity; You who are young, old, rich, poor; You of all abilities; You from all nations and ethnic backgrounds; You of all sexual orientations, gender identities or gender expression.
We are committed to racial equity, economic equity, gender equity, sexual equity. We are committed to learn, celebrate, advocate and welcome everyone through a series of forums and educational opportunities. May we grow in acceptance and become a voice for inclusion, equity and justice.
No matter where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.

Pet blessing
St Francis of Assisi was an Italian mystic and friar who was born into a wealthy family but renounced his wealth for a life of religious devotion. He is associated with a love for all creation, especially animals, and many churches (yes, including Lutheran ones) honor his feast day on Oct. 4 by giving a special blessing to people’s animal companions. Bethesda is glad to follow this tradition by introducing our first pet blessing on Monday, Oct. 5, from 10 am to noon. If you would like your pet to receive a blessing, please bring them to the fenced yard off of the alley. We will have water and treats available for them as well.

The Lay School is a ministry of the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin and is designed to lead lay people to a deeper Christian identity and increased participation in the mission of the whole church. New Bible study
The Doctrine of Discovery was a 15th-century doctrine of the church that claimed for European states all lands not occupied by Christian peoples. The results were genocidal. In 2016, the ELCA formally repudiated this doctrine and apologized for the atrocities it contributed to. But an apology is only as good as the changes that follow it. As Lutheran Christians, it is our responsibility to learn about this doctrine and its legacy, and to begin to repair the damage that it caused.
Look for a new Bible study beginning the week of Oct. 19, “Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery.” We’ll look at some of the texts that were used to defend this troubling understanding, and also lift up scriptural warrants to work for its dismantling and repair of the relationships that have been broken by it.

The BRICK’s Food Shelf Program focuses on providing a wide variety of food options in a range of forms (fresh, frozen, canned) to program participants. At times, some of the items we offer are not available through our usual donations network. This means we either need to purchase those products or go without. YOU can help out to ensure that the Food Shelf Program has a wide variety of nutritious foods to offer pantry shoppers. Throughout October The BRICK is asking for donations of holiday side dishes and supplies ( canned cranberries and pumpkin, boxed potato mix, pie crusts, baking supplies, etc.). At the end of the month, please connect with our Food Shelf Manager Amaris Shrider to drop off your donation. Reach her by phone at 715-682-7425 ext. 3 or email at foodshelfmanager@thebrickministries.org. Thank you for your support!
