Halloween Costume Dress Code
Halloween is coming up! We want to remind everyone that the Dress for Success norms still apply. We want all students to know that any weapons (real or fake) associated with costumes are not allowed at school. Costumes that are offensive or target race, sexual orientation, gender identity, etcetera are not permitted. For students who have questions about appropriate costumes, ask Mr. Chui or Ms. O'Brien for help.

Hillview Basketball Volunteer Coaching Positions

Math Contest
Tuesday, November 13, 3:15 - 4:10 p.m., Room G2, Hillview
Does your student want to get involved in a nation-wide math competition that involves problem-solving skills in a timed format? The AMC 8 contest is a timed math competition (in an exam-like format) that over 170,000 students from over 2,300 schools participated in last year. Students compete for both local and national awards.

Hillview Music
Hillview After-School Chorus
Come sing with us!  Tuesdays 3:15 - 4:15 p.m. and Thursdays 2:40 - 3:40 p.m. for an hour after school. The Hillview Chorus is actively seeking new members. If you like to sing, come on by! You are welcome to stop by and try it out? Chorus is open to all grade levels 6 - 8. It is a fun group and we will also be going to Disneyland with the Band and Orchestra in the Spring. 
 
Special Preview of My Fair Lady - Free to Hillview Students
Thursday, October 25, 7:30 p.m., Woodside Community Theater 
A wonderful production, with elegant costumes, a 26-piece orchestra, and an incredible cast. Mr. Vaughan and Ms. Connelly, who taught science and Spanish last year at Hillview, are in the cast. We have been rehearsing at Hillview since August. As a show of appreciation for letting the company use our great facilities, they have offered a free preview performance to all Hillview students. Bring your Hillview ID. Accompanying adults are asked to make a $15 donation. More information and general ticket information  here.

Music provides all of these 21st-century skills:
  • Creativity - Students learn to think about problems from a variety of viewpoints and increase their problem-solving skills.
  • Collaboration - Through working together to create a finished product, students learn to incorporate different approaches and to leverage individual strengths for a higher-quality outcome.
  • Confidence - Through consistent performance for their peers and for audiences, music study helps students develop greater confidence in themselves and their abilities.
  • Critical Thinking - Through the creative process, students strengthen their skills in synthesizing and evaluating information, and apply these skills to changing their assumptions and actions.

Hillview ASB
Food Drive Benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank
October 15 through November 1, 8:00 - 8:20 a.m., in the PAC lobby or anytime during school hours in the school 
office. Place cans in a clearly marked bag for 6th, 7th, or 8th grade (so we can award spirit 

points.)
The most needed ite ms a re canned tuna, chicken, or salmon, peanut butter , meals in a can (like soup, stew, and chili,) low sodium canned vegetables, and cereal boxes. We will not be accepting any items packaged in glass, rice, or any candy or sweetened drinks.

Our goal this year is 3500 items! CAN we do it? This is a great cause and a friendly spirit competition between 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade students. Thank you for your help in this annual tradition where our Hillview community typically places among the leaders in the Bay Area and has been awarded Bronze and Silver status for our generosity every year since 2006. To the students who turned out last week to assemble over 100 dog and cat toys! Students will bring the toys to Pets in Need on Thursday, October 25 and Thursday, November 1. The students will get a tour of the shelter and meet the animals! A third visit is being planned due to overwhelming response from the kids.

Love learning about animal service? Want to cheer up a serviceman abroad with some halloween treats? Join our next few lunchtime club meetings to delve more into animal service dogs, learn about Operation Smile, and upcoming events!

Hillview After-School Sports
Basketball Season Coming Up
Girls and Boys Basketball registration will open on Sportability  here on Monday, October 22 through November 1. Evaluations and team selection will take place:
  • Saturday, November 10 for Boys Basketball
  • Sunday, November 11 for Girls Basketball
Be sure to sign up when registration opens and be ready for league games to start the week of December 3.

Health Connected Family Talk: Puberty  Wednesday, October 24, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m., Palo Alto Medical Foundation 795 El Camino Real, Hearst Conference Center, Jamplis Building, Palo Alto. In a relaxed and friendly setting, parents and their children share, laugh and learn about the physical changes of puberty together. Recommended for children aged 10-12. Atherton Halloween Party  Friday, October 26, 3:00 - 6:00 p.m., 2 Dinkelspiel Station, Atherton Students in the M-A High School Leadership Class have designed and built a haunted house in the old Atherton Library Building, intended for ages 6-12. There will be story time, a photo booth, a pumpkin station, imagination playground, costumes, balloon makers, a jumpy house, music, prizes, and ice cream truck, donuts, coffee, cookies, and beverages. We encourage everyone to show up in costume and we hope to see you all there!

Junípero Serra High School Preview  Monday, November 12, 7:00 p.m., Home of Kelly and Michael Morehead. Learn why Junípero Serra High School could be the right choice for your son during the transformative years of high school, when character is shaped and foundational values are determined. Come meet Serra students, parents, and teachers who will speak to the rigor of the academics, the extracurricular programs, and the legendary Serra brotherhood. Register here.

Stanford Brexfit LAB  Recruiting volunteers for a brain and exercise study. We are looking for adolescents aged 12-17 years old with or without attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to take part in a neuroimaging research study exploring the effects of cycling=exercise upon brain function. The study involves 3 sessions lasting up to 3 hours. Participants will receive $50 Amazon voucher. Sessions will be arranged at times convenient for you (weekdays, after-school, and holidays). Redwood National Junior Basketball Winter Season  R egistration is now open here. Our focus is on skills-based instruction, personal growth, and positive competition for kids from 1st through 8th grades in Menlo Park, Atherton, Portola Valley, Woodside, or East Palo Alto. The season runs from November through February.

Summer 2019 Italy Trip  Hillview Social Studies teachers Marianne Santo and Mike Rogers will be taking students and parents on an educational tour to Italy during summer break June 2019. Submissions to the Newsletter : The deadline to submit to the Hillview Newsletter is Wednesday at noon . Email your submission to  [email protected] . Note that submissions may be edited for content and/or length. Submissions received after the deadline will be eligible for inclusion the following week. Submissions are eligible to run for up to two weeks.

Submissions for Off-Campus Community event: E mail your announcement to  [email protected] . The submission deadline is  Wednesday at noon.
