Rebuilding
Maria Allen’s new home was designed to her specifications in the Jacobethan style by Philadelphia architect Robert McGoodwin. Intended to be a more subdued version of Hampshire House, this elegant, 26-room mansion was named Cheyenne House, though sometimes referred to by Maria as “the cottage.”
Cheyenne House was built using the very bricks, slate, windows, and many other fixtures from the previous house (with enough left over for two additional small cottages, a garage, and a wall surrounding the estate).
It is said that Maria duplicated many parts of Hampshire House, except for any rooms she associated with her former husband. This became Chapel’s parish hall, now known as Allen House.
