Winter Weather Preparedness Part I: Ensuring Buildings Are Ready

It seems hard to believe another year has gone by, but the recent drop in temperature fortells that winter weather will be upon us soon. As such, it is time to begin preparing for winter weather.

In considering the impact inclement weather can have, it is important to make sure buildings are ready for the change in temperatures. The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) states that “extreme cold, ice, sleet, and snow can be dangerous for students and faculty alike, but also for buildings.”

To help ensure your school or district is prepared, ISBE recommends that schools have licensed professionals inspect heating units; water pipes; roofs, including drains, downspouts, etc.; and generators to ensure all are in proper working order, and add insulation where needed. ISBE also suggests that all staff learn the location of emergency shut-off valves and to have a plan for staff to “routinely maintain and check your school buildings, especially during winter and summer breaks when extreme weather may still happen and no one is occupying the building.”
