In the years after Benjamin Allen left, Maria did not return to Philadelphia to be with her family because her daughter, Hope, suffered from tuberculosis. Maria believed the best treatment she could provide for her only daughter was to be found in Colorado Springs.
While Hope got the care she needed, Maria landscaped the outside grounds into formal and casual gardens. The south-facing veranda had a goldfish pond in the middle and was bordered by rose bushes. Maria was obsessed with the location of the trees on the grounds. She had a moving company from Denver come every month to move various trees, digging the holes by hand.
In 1950, at the age of 79, Maria Wharton McKean Allen fell (probably breaking her hip) while supervising the gardeners in the flower beds across from the circular drive. She suffered a long illness and died December 13, 1950, with her night nurse at her side. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church where private services were held. Maria was interred in a grave plot at Evergreen Cemetery.
