The weekly newsletter from North Universalist Chapel Society in Woodstock, Vermont

Our Mission

Guided by Unitarian Universalist principles, the North Chapel aspires to be a congregation that nurtures the growth and supports the needs of its members, sustains a strong spiritual life within a loving church community, and seeks to have a positive impact on the world around us.

We strive to offer opportunities for our church community to participate in local, regional, and national events, and to share information about causes, action opportunities, organizations, and publications which relate to upholding our Seven Principles.

The Seven Unitaran Universalist Principles

I. The inherent worth and dignity of every person;

II. Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;

III. Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;

IV. A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;

V. The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;

VI. The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;

VII. Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

Worship Theme for the Month

November - Justice in Action

We risk misunderstanding one another when we rely on inherited assumptions and unexamined patterns. If we do not learn each other’s true selves, those patterns can shape our relationships and cause harm. But with care, attention, and openness, we can choose a more honest way of seeing and being in relationship together.

Reflection by Rev. Leon Dunkley

Longing Wears the Mask of Beautiful Things (or Post-Halloween Fight Club 101, the Beginner’s Course)

Halloween has come and gone but the candy is still here with us. The costumes that we wore are in the laundry basket...or they're still draped over the couch in the family room or over a chair in the kitchen - the wings, the shields, the capes, the halos, the masks we chose to wear.

Our costumes say something about us, something about the longing in our hearts. We long for love and peace. We long for health and justice. We long for grace. What do our longings say about us? What do they say about what we’re reaching for? What do they say about what we are aspiring to?

Reflection by Judith Taylor

"Reaching Home"

The 17th C Japanese poet, Matsuo Basho wrote: Every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home. We're all pilgrims, meant to learn from everything and everyone we encounter. Where is your path leading you?

Judith Taylor's work as a writer and visual artist reflects her interest in how the energy and mystery of the creative process may inform our life.

This service was not recored at the request of the speaker.

For almost 90 years, the North Chapel has hosted its annual Red Flannel Hash dinner in its historic Woodstock church. Not wanting to break this tradition, we will again be serving this classic New England dinner in takeout form as the “Hash Dash.

Rumors of Its Origins

But maybe you’re wondering about that “red flannel” name. There are many rumors of its 18th - century origins, the most notorious involving a strong-minded Yankee woman, so angry with her husband that she cooked up his red flannels with the dinner hash. He liked it so much that, once he was forgiven, she kept serving up the same recipe, substituting beets for his flannels.

We can assure you that no red flannel underwear is involved in the closely guarded secret recipe for North Chapel’s Red Flannel Hash. But we can reveal that it involves a lovingly stirred fry-up of corned beef, beets and potato. And judging by the number of people who would never miss the event, it is highly addictive!

The “Hash Dash” meal includes hash, pickles, beans, slaw, home-baked bread, and your choice of apple or pumpkin pie.

Please place your order ASAP!

Pickup on Saturday, November 7th from noon to 1:30

Book Club for October

On Thursday, November 19th, we'll discuss what comes to mind about the autobiographical novel The House at Sugar Beach by reporter and NYTimes diplomatic correspondent, Helene Cooper, who grew up in Liberia. She helps us to understand Liberian history, leading to a better understanding of how a Liberian, an African, thinks. This may be our best discussion yet.

Woodstock Window Dressers Build - We Need Your Help!

Because of the after school program in the social hall,

WindowDressers are building at the Masonic Hall this year, November 5th - 12th!

Sustainable Woodstock's fifth annual Window Dressers Community Build is coming up November 5-12th! We are in need of many more volunteers to help make this event possible.

During this week-long event, volunteers come together to construct insulating window inserts for low- and moderate-income community members. These inserts act as interior storm windows, reducing drafts and insulating homes.

There is a job for everyone at our Community Build. Some volunteers will bring lunch and snacks for others to eat, some will greet and sign in volunteers as they enter, and the rest of the volunteers will construct the inserts themselves. Absolutely no carpentry or building skills are necessary– we have taught steps in the process to children as young as 12 years old, and to many adults without experience.

Sign up to join us at https://signup.com/go/eZXxYyY

Window Dressers estimates that on average, 10 inserts will save 105 gallons of heating fuel per year. This means that our five builds combined will save over 10,000 gallons of fuel for our community this winter.

Join us to meet new friends, help your neighbors, and help the environment. We could not run this impactful program without those of you in our community who generously volunteer your time.

If you are a returning volunteer, THANK YOU! We are in a new location at the Woodstock Masonic Hall this year. We look forward to seeing you there!

Anne Macksoud's sister Joyce Dann's production:

"THE ARCHITECTURE OF INTIMACY"

An original theatrical symposium exploring love, intimacy, attachment, and the mysteries of human relationships.

Through interwoven voices, poetry, dialogue, and music, this unusual theatrical experience invites us to reflect on the ways we construct—and sometimes dismantle—our relationships.

North Chapel Emergency Procedures 2026

There is always a chance an emergency will arise at the North Chapel that requires such a rapid response that normal board or committee or individual personnel procedures are hard or impossible to follow.

Emergency situations like this require more clarity in how to respond.

The following procedure will be implemented for extended power outages or other emergency situations.

First: The board chair or co-chairs, in consultation with the minister and others directly connected to the nature of the emergency, will make the needed decisions.

Second: If these individuals are not reachable, Board Members Dana Hall, Michael Zsoldos and Amy McElroy, Woodstock village residents, would be consulted.

Third: A sheet with email addresses, cell and landline phone numbers of the North Chapel Leadership, employees, committee chairs and members has been posted on the bulletin board in and in the old office. It has been distributed to the minister, board members and employees.

Fourth: The congregation will be made aware of the situation by email and on the church website and listserv. We encourage everyone to sign up for our Constant Contact emails here: https://bit.ly/4625KkM

Please be sure we have your cell phone numbers for texting if power is out or the internet is down.
