October is Peak Fire Season

Wildfires are a year-round concern in the East Bay, but fire risks are greatest in the fall, when vegetation is at its driest and offshore Diablo winds are common. Please be aware of fire hazards, restrictions, and Red Flag Warnings, and follow all fire safety rules.

East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) would like to remind visitors to the parks that there is NO smoking or vaping in parks, NO fireworks, and to report fire hazards, and call 911 if you see an active fire.

Planning Ahead for Mental Health Care

Contra Costa Health is helping residents learn about an important tool for planning ahead for mental health care: Psychiatric Advance Directives (PADs).

Contra Costa County is one of eight counties participating in the statewide California Psychiatric Advance Directives Innovation Project, which is working to increase awareness and use of PADs.

A Psychiatric Advance Directive allows individuals to document their preferences for mental health treatment and identify trusted people who can help support them if they experience a future mental health crisis.

Beginning October 1st, residents may notice advertisements about PADs on AC Transit buses and throughout the community. The outreach campaign will connect people with information about PADs, including resources explaining how to create one.

The goal is to give residents another way to communicate their wishes, plan ahead, and make sure their preferences are known when they may need support most.

Get Storm-Ready & Review Your Insurance Coverage

With a potentially significant El Niño season ahead, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara is encouraging residents to review their insurance coverage before severe weather arrives. Most standard homeowners and renters policies do not cover flooding, and flood insurance generally has a 30-day waiting period before coverage takes effect.

Residents are also encouraged to review auto coverage, create a home inventory, clear gutters and drains, secure outdoor items, and make sure emergency supplies and important documents are ready.
