Fall Findings by Kathy Underwood

I write this upon my return from the Living Legacy Pilgrimage in Alabama that I went on, joined by 17 others from UCE. To say that this experience was transformative would be an understatement. While I was fortunate that I grew up in a place that had good public schools and didn’t shy away from the history of the Civil Rights Movement, I still learned even more about the many stories that happened in between the ones I learned about in school. However, hearing the personal accounts and walking in the same places that made history were the things that brought that history alive and helped me feel many emotions. Our tour guides used readings, poetry, and music to enhance it all in a meaningful way.

Hats Off

Our hats are off to Curtis Evans, who was interviewed in the Evanston RoundTable this week about his recent experience of being tear gassed while peacefully protesting at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Broadview, IL. Curt shared with the RoundTable about his life, including his UCE Community, saying that “The church helps to ground me in the principles of justice, the inherent worth of every human being, the inherent dignity of every human being on Earth.” We are grateful to Curt for sharing with the world how he grounds his activism in our UU values.

Deepening the Spiritual Journey

Tuesdays, October 14, 21 and 28 from 7-8:30 at UCE

Join Rev. Eileen and Kathy Underwood in an exploration of the spiritual pathways we have all traveled in our lives; the pathways which have led us to where we are today. In this three-part workshop, we will reflect on, map out and share our journeys, with the hopes that some will consider sharing theirs in worship.

This is an extension of the new member journey class, open to members and friends, high schoolers and up, no matter how long you’ve been at UCE.

Our Shared Offering Program

Our Shared Offering Program is one of the ways that we live into our mission statement "for a world made whole." Each Sunday, the funds collected during our worship service either via text donations or in the collection bowls (and not otherwise designated for a pledge or something else) are shared equally between our operating budget and the current Shared Offering Recipient.

This Sunday's offering will be shared with Run On Climate Education Fund, whose mission is to strengthen the climate movement by empowering local changemakers with the skills and resources they need to move their community off of fossil fuels as quickly as possible.

Next Endowment Grant Deadline is Oct 31

Upcoming Endowment Grant Deadline

Up to 5% of the Endowment Fund is distributed annually in grants requested by the Congregation or Staff. Once that amount has been determined by the Endowment Trustees, grants may be made in specified proportion for:

– 35% in Congregational Support for special projects, care of the building and property, and education and training;

– 25 % (up to $3,000 per organization) to UCE Community Partners to deepen relationships with organizations that have long-term relationships with UCE volunteers and the Congregation; or

– 40% for Community Projects of nonprofit organizations that support the wider mission of Unitarian Universalism.

We are introducing a new way to find opportunities for volunteering here at UCE. The Volunteer Opportunities Cart is located next to the Welcome Table with the red table cloth each Sunday. It is a rolling cart of rainbow drawers--so it's easy to spot. Visit the cart to find out what UCE groups and teams are doing and what volunteer assistance they need. Simply look in the drawers for a brief descriptions of the task listed on the drawer label. Each description includes contact information, so you may reach out to the proper person to learn more. Please stop by to try it out!

Please join the UCE Endowment Committee for an after-church learning session on estate planning and charitable giving. We will host local attorney Tom Denman who specializes in estate planning. Tom will focus on two aspects of estate planning. The first portion will cover some of the basics, including wills, trusts, powers of attorney for property and powers of attorney for health care, and the benefits of each. The second portion will cover the ways to make charitable gifts other than simply writing a check. We will discuss things ranging from the relatively simple, such as donating appreciated stock or contributing required minimum distributions, to the complex, such as charitable lead trusts, charitable remainder trusts, and private foundations.

Workshop in Ritual Elements, Earth-Based Spirituality and The Divine Feminine

When: 3 Sundays, October 5, 12, and 26, 2025 from 12:00-1:30pm

Where: Room 3

Convener: Sandra Schroeder, PhD

This 3 session workshop is informed by Starhawk’s work, The Spiral Dance, a primer on how to practice earth-based spirituality, honoring the divine feminine. We will learn how to create sacred space, call in various aspects of the goddess, honor the seasons, the moon times, and our own life cycles. Using evocative ritual elements drawn from poetry, imagery, song, and ancient European Wiccan tradition, we will develop a deeper affinity with nature, the divine feminine, and our ancient lineage. The course relies upon film clips, images, and enactments, as well as the writings of Starhawk and others.

Required Reading: The Spiral Dance by Starhawk. To check out a copy from the UCE Library, please email Rev. Susan at sfrances@ucevanston.org.
