FROM THE DEI COMMITTEE

Welcome to the Diversity, Equity & Inclusive (DEI) part of the newsletter brought to you by the DEI Committee! Periodically, we’d like to highlight local DEI events as well as feature different cultural holidays and traditions celebrated around the world and in our very own ICS community.

This week we would like to share some information about Diwali.

Diwali, the festival of lights, is the one of the most awaited and celebrated festivals of India.

Diwali occurs annually in autumn (or spring, in the southern hemisphere), during the Hindu month of Kartik. (To put it in Western terms, Kartik begins around mid-October and ends in mid-November.) Specifically, Diwali occurs on the darkest day of the lunar month, which is the day of the new Moon.

People in every nook and cranny of the country welcome the festival with enthusiastic gestures. This year, Diwali was celebrated on October 24. This wonderful festival is a celebration of five days. On the third day of the celebratory occasion, the key rituals of the Diwali festival take place. Lighting Diyas and candles all around the house, worshipping the Laxmi Ganesha to summon health and wealth, and bursting crackers are the chief rituals of the festival.

In addition, the exchange of heartfelt gifts during Diwali these days has become a mandatory part of the celebration. Friends, families, and colleagues share with each other Diwali gifts as a gesture of love and affection. Also, the occasion features a grand feast with delicious food that mandatorily includes different varieties of sweets like Gulab Jamun. You can check out some Indian recipes in ICS DEI Cookbook which can be found here

Check out below the celebration that was hosted at the white house, the largest Diwali celebration ever held in the white house.
