We are the people of the United Methodist Church.

Notes from the Road is one of the ways that we at Journey stay connected. Connections and community are keys to a vital church ... and are part of what keeps us bound together in the service of Christ.

So, welcome to you as we journey together on the road where we as a s pirit-filled, forward-leaning community of believers seek to become the hands and feet of Jesus.

Recognizing Opportunities

One of my favorite comic strips is Bill Watterson's "Calvin and Hobbes", a cartoon that follows the life of the rambunctious and imaginative six-year-old Calvin and his stuffed toy tiger Hobbes.

In the very last strip from December 31, 1995, Watterson draws a panel wherein Calvin and Hobbes are playing outside one winter morning.
Looking at the freshly fallen snow, Hobbes says the world looks brand new, like a big white sheet of paper, to which Calvin replies, "It's a new year, a fresh clean start, a day full of possibilities."

I think what makes this scene particularly memorable and thought-provoking is the idea that we sometimes need a new perspective to see the opportunities that we would otherwise miss. We're all creatures of habit, and we tend to seek the familiar, and become stuck in our routines.

But every day is a gift from God, and maybe when we shift our perspectives and see each day as a chance to live out our faith, we'll be able to see opportunities to do God's will.  This will look different for each of us, maybe it'll be forging new friendships or being a part of a new church ministry. The point is we need to have a spirit of discernment, and look for those God-given opportunities to love our neighbors and become more effective servants for God's kingdom.

What do you think of when you think of fellowship?

What images come to mind? Do you see the table full of food that seems to magically appear when the word potluck is spoken? Do you see groups of folks from your church family chatting and laughing before and after church? Do you think about...
