Toyota has partnered with Sumitomo to produce solid state batteries with longer lives and faster charging times. They expect to introduce cars with these batteries by 2027.

GM’s LMR Battery Plans
GM is partnering with LG Energy Solutions to produce Lithium Manganese-Rich (LMR) batteries for mid-size EV trucksl. LMR batteries are expected to have higher energy density and to be less expensive than conventional Li batteries.

Tesla’s Robo Taxi Lessons Downloaded to Consumers
Tesla has gained significant knowledge operating robo taxis in San Francisco and Austin that they are now downloading to consumers. These include improved navigation around blocked roads, enhanced handling of unprotected turns and lane changes, better detection of debris, and improved response to emergency vehicles.

Ford Pauses Lightning Production
Ford has announced that they have paused production of the Lightning due in part to a shortage of aluminum and will transfer all Lighting-related manufacturing jobs and add 1,000 new jobs to boost production of ICE and PHEV trucks that use less aluminum by 50,000 units in 2026.

Rivian Laying Off Employees
Rivian CEO R.J. Scaringe has announced that Rivian will lay off over 600 employees as they are restructuring their marketing, vehicle operations, sales/delivery and mobile operations teams.

GM Ends Brightdrop Production
At a GM earnings call on October 21, CEO Mary Berra announced that GM will discontinue production of the Brightdrop Step Van. Ms. Berry cited a slower than projected growth in the commercial electric van market that has been made more challenging due to regulatory and incentive changes.

Google Goes Nuclear
As Google seeks the power to expand their AI capabilities, they have made aggressive moves into nuclear power, signing a 25 year Power Purchase Agreement with Iowa’s Duane Arnold Nuclear facility. This facility was decommissioned in 2020 but will be brought back online by 2029.

Tesla Cybertrucks in Las Vegas Police Force
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has put 10 Tesla Cybertrucks into daily patrol service on the Las Vegas Strip and surrounding areas. The police package upfits were done by California-based company UP.FIT.
