COG’s current COVID-19 Update
FAITH that Works
Understanding Trials

James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion: Greetings.Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, 10 and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.

12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.                                                                                     James 1:1-12  ESV

Truth: Faith that is real works practically in one’s life.

What can we learn from trials that can help us consider it all joy?

Lesson #1: Testing brings spiritual _____________________. (vs. 2-3)

Lesson #2: ________________ brings about ________________. (v. 4)

Trials and temptations will happen,
and God intends for both to strengthen our faith.

Use the following game plan with your family, LifeGroup, or personal study this week. Allow this game plan to stimulate conversations with each other and with God.

Game Plan This Week:

1st Down:
- Review the sermon
o What were the main points?
o What points were most meaningful to you?

2nd Down:
- Study/discuss the text
o What qualifies as a trial (v.2)? What qualifies as a temptation (v. 13)?
Both “temp” and “temptation” are translated from the same Greek word.
o How do trials test the genuineness of our faith?
o Explain how believing in God’s sovereignty through our trials is crucial
to persevering faith.
o What is the truth that we are to walk in? How would you put into your
own words, the “true Gospel”?

3rd Down:
- Break into smaller groups and discuss these questions and pray for each
o How do unbelievers you know attempt to make it through painful
o How have you persevered through such times in your life?
- Share with your group how you would have them pray for you.
o Are you having to persevere in faith right now?
o Share other needs in your life right now (employment, finances,
relationships, family, health, etc.)

4th Down:
- This week make a commitment to sit down often with God and discuss the
strength of your faith.
o Ask God to strengthen, embolden, heal, and refresh your soul.
o Talk to God about 3 people in your network of relationships that are far
from God. Pray for their salvation and how God might use you to
introduce them to God.

Elder Nomination Time:
The elders are requesting nominations from the congregation for new elders. Please read Titus 1:5-9 and 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and pray over these passages. If there is a man at COG that the Lord lays on your heart to nominate as an elder at COG, please take the following steps:

  1. Contact that person and ask if they would be ok with you nominating them to be an elder.
  2. If agreed, then email their name to Steve Veteto. You can also put their information on the Elder Nomination Form located in the sanctuary.

Please have nomination turned in by October 11, 2020. If you have any questions, you can reach out to any of the elders at COG.

Helping the Homeless:
Carol Bryan has coordinated a couple of opportunities to help those less fortunate. These opportunities happen each year and it is a blessing to be able to help those around us who are in need. Thank you, Carol, for organizing!

Blankets for the Homeless: We are collecting donations to pay for new blankets to give to the homeless in Aurora and Denver. One blanket is $6 and we have ordered 72 blankets this year. Please give your donations directly to Carol Bryan or make a check to Community of Grace and put "blankets" on the "for" line. Donations will be accepted through October 18. If you would like to help hand out blankets please contact Carol Bryan in person or at 303-522-2293 for date and time.

Titus 2 Ministry: Scarves for the Homeless. We will be meeting in the North Building foyer on Saturday, October 24 from 9-10am to make scarves for the homeless. Please wear a mask for this activity. We will have tables spread out through the room for social distancing. Families are welcome to join in the fun.

Sunday Prayer Time: The COG prayer team is gathering outside, in the parking lot, weather permitting, at COG each Sunday at 9:15 am - 9:45 am to pray before worship service. Please bring your own chair. You can email Kathleen Chandler if you have any questions.
