Minister's Musings
Dear Friends
This Sunday is a great Sunday in the church year. It’s World Communion Sunday! (I know how excited you all are about it!!)
World Communion Sunday is a day when most Christian churches commit to celebrating communion as a sign of our unity in the Body of Christ. While Roman Catholics, the Orthodox, and many Anglicans and Lutherans celebrate the sacrament weekly, many of us do not. Some are monthly, some are quarterly, varying from church to church. But on this one day we choose to celebrate as a way of remembering that our unity is a calling from Jesus.
In John 17, we see the longest prayer of Jesus, the High Priestly Prayer. In it, Jesus prays, “May they be one, Father, as you and I are one, so that the world will see and believe.” Jesus knew that our oneness as Christians is not dependent on sharing the exact same beliefs or hymns, or on all of us worshiping the same way. Our oneness comes from Jesus, who is the head of the Church. Our unity is not something we achieve; it's a reality of our being a part of the Body of Christ!
So, on this Sunday, we will celebrate communion together, knowing that our friends in the Presbyterian, Anglican, Roman, and other churches are gathering around their tables too. And as we partake of the bread and the cup, we pray that the things that divide us will one day fall away, and that we can truly begin to live into the unity of our baptisms. Wouldn't that be a great witness to Jesus’ love?
See you Sunday!
