Staff Highlight: Julia Ash, written by Lee Bannor

Julia Ash is our wonderful nursery worker. She started working at UCE about 15 years ago when her daughter, Winnie Stevenson, told her that we needed someone for that job. She likes the gig because the children in the nursery are so nice. The adults are nice too. She would like some adults, not just parents, to stick their heads in once in a while because most people in the church don’t know her.

As for other church activities, she likes the annual picnic and other activities on the south lawn because it gives her an opportunity to mingle with other church members. It makes her feel more connected. Watching the kids is delightful too. When she first started her grandkids were nursery age so that was fun. She was hired by Connie Grant, who also married Winnie and Warwick. She grew up in Northbrook and still lives there. She remembers when it was surrounded mostly by farmland.

Our hats are off the team of folks who have been planting, trimming, and sprucing up the gardens around our parking lot. A few weeks ago, several members with green thumbs donated plants from their own gardens and/or spent time planting hostas and irises at the south end of the lot: Lynn Kendall, Jeanne Kerl, Ellie Feddersen, Janelle Brittain, Jeannie McCullough, and Christine Peters. Then, last Sunday, Topher Carrington, Jeannie McCullough, and Christine Peters trimmed the overgrowth along the fence on the west side of the parking lot and Janelle Brittain planted daffodil and tulip bulbs in the peace garden by the ramp. Many thanks to all of you for your contributions of time, talent, and treasure in making our grounds beautiful and well cared for. All who come to our building experience the benefit of your offerings.

Requests to have articles in the newsletter should be sent to newsletter@ucevanston.org by noon on Wednesdays.

Harms Woods Seed Collecting

Sunday, October 22nd 1-4 pm

Please join us for a workday at beautiful Harms Woods in Glenview. We will be collecting native wildflower seeds that will be used to restore sections of the forest preserve where invasive plants have been removed. It's easy and fun, and no previous experience is required. We will likely walk about 2 miles over uneven ground, and it may be muddy. Youth 12 or older are welcome with an adult. We will meet at 1 pm at the Glenview Woods parking lot on Harms Road just south of Glenview Road.

QUESTIONS?

Did you know that Rev. Dave Sammons brought the idea of a Service Auction fundraiser to UCE in 1978? In the spirit of a service auction, in this year's auction, you could win a lift to the airport from Lee Bannor, Dale Griffin's help with handyman projects and, new to the auction this year, "Kristin Larsen's Super Schlepper Services" to help with a household project. Also new to the auction this year, choir members will serenade someone special during kinship hour, Sean Talmage invites you to a Beer 101 class, and you can tour Paul Schweikher's house, the architect that built our beloved church building. Hoa & Ned are hosting a Vietnamese meal, Rev Eileen will create a custom portrait of your favorite subject and you can learn to make holiday cake pops with Susan Carlton.  We hope these creative offerings sparked some of your own ideas. We are looking for your donations!

Email auction@ucevanston.org with questions and ideas or complete the donation form at www.fundraiser.bid/UCE to buy a raffle ticket, pre-order a t-shirt or donate an item to the auction. The auction team is glad to answer any questions at auction@ucevanston.org. READ MORE!

2023 Actions of Immediate Witness Part 2

Actions of Immediate Witness (AIW) express the conscience and carry the authority of the delegates at the General Assembly (GA) at which it is passed. A description of the AIW process, from initiation to formal passage at GA, appeared in the Sept. 29 newsletter.

Organizing for Health Equity

AIW Attacks against abortion rights, against gender affirming health care programs, and against the very young and the very old, combined with the impact of systemic racism, pandemics, poverty, and other problems, have raised awareness about the need for health equity and mutual aid. This AIW calls for new partnerships to secure personal and social wellness, with justice for all people, in all nations.

UCE Book Clubs

UCE Non-Fiction Book Group

We are reading David Treuer's books about Native American history. Participants may choose to read Treuer's 512 page book entitled The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee: Native America from 1890 to the Present, published in 2019 or his shorter, 275 page young adult book entitled The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee: Life in Native America, published in 2022.

The author shatters the myth that Native American civilization ended in 1890 with the massacre of more than 150 Sioux at Wounded Knee. He blends historical research, interviews with tribal members and his own personal reflections on growing up Indian to tell the true story of Native resilience and resistance to being written out of modern American history.

The group will meet the 2nd Sunday of each month from November 2023 through April 2024 from 12:30-1:30 pm at UCE. Rev. Eileen and Rev. Susan will take turns facilitating a monthly conversation using the congregational case studies provided in the book.
