WEEKLY UPDATE | October 6-12, 2019
THIS SUNDAY, October 6
Grounded and Guided
What practices and ideas ground us in our values, help us to hold to what is good, and guide us to spend our time and energy in ways that dignify and celebrate the gift of life?
Worship Service October 6
Blessing of the Animals | 10am
Rev. Dr. Victoria Weinstein, Parish Minister
Kittens and bunnies and pugs, oh my!
Come all creatures small and large and in between. This Sunday is Blessing of the Animals when we recognize the animals that make our lives richer in so many ways.
You're invited to bring in your furry, feathered, scaly, animal companions for a special blessing by Reverend Vicki and the congregation.

Ushers and Hospitality Orientation This Sunday
11:30am - 12:15pm in the sanctuary
All Invited
Thank you so much to all of you who have come to the Sabbatical Chats over the past several weeks. A Sabbatical Guide will be ready for everyone next weekend and will contain lots of helpful information and contact information.

All are welcome to an Ushers and Hospitality Orientation with Rev. Vicki this Sunday. Even if you have been on the usher team for a long time, it will be good to review ushers duties and details. No one should ever usher alone: there is too much to keep an eye on and do during the service for one person. So please sign on to be on the rotation and "take the (offering) plate" once a month or so.
Children and Youth 2019-2020 Faith Development
Reminder: All Children/Youth must register for the program each fall. You can download and complete a registration form here . If you have questions, please contact Mark LaPointe, Director of Community Life and Learning.

The childcare room is open and offers a safe, play oriented environment for children 4 and under. The church will do its best to schedule childcare workers each Sunday. If no one is able to staff the room on a given Sunday, parents are welcome to supervise their children in the room during worship. If you know someone who might enjoy a paid position watching young children during church, please have them contact the Director of Community Life and Learning at mlapointe@uucgl.org .

Swampscott Interfaith Food Pantry
We still need 15 bags filled!
Of the 35 bags we deliver, we have about 15 that still need to be filled. Please stop by our table in the Parish Hall and pick up a bag to fill. The UUW and the recipients thank you!
A shopping list is provided with each bag and we ask that you return the bags on October 6th or October 13th . Our stage is full right now, so please place your bags in the room to the left after you enter the church front door.

We will deliver the bags to the recipients on October 17. Thanks in advance for your support!
Food is First Campaign
A new church year brings new challenges and goals. Please join the Social Justice Ministry Team’s “Food is First” Campaign. The goal of “Food is First” is to increase our monthly donations to the St. Stephen’s Food Pantry by having all church attendees bring a food item to church on the first Sunday of the month. Nutritious food is essential to combat food insecurity, or, more simply put, hunger.
This Sunday, October 6, is the first Sunday of the month. Remember to bring a non-perishable food item (tuna fish, cans of soup or stew, etc.) to church to place in the bin directly to the right as you enter the church. Please check the expiration date as the pantry cannot accept food past its expiration date due to health regulations.
PS: Food will be accepted all Sundays in case you forget or miss the first Sunday! And remember “Food is First”!
Our Church Family
We send our condolences to Harry, Peter and Tim Gonsalves, the family of Elaine Gonsalves , who died last week after suffering a heart attack. The Gonsalves family, long-time active church members, moved to Florida years ago. Condolences can be sent to The Gonsalves Family, 4209 Bismarck Palm Drive Tampa Florida 33610.
Tim posted the following on facebook last week.
Yesterday I had to say goodbye to my mother, Elaine Gonsalves. Her passing was sudden and unexpected. It has comforted the family that she did not suffer and her family was able to say goodbye and be by her side as she passed on. My mother was an amazing woman with a genuinely kind heart. Her joy in life was her family and she will be deeply missed. Mom we love you so much and your spirit will live on in all of our hearts.

UUSC Hurricane Dorian Crisis Response
The Denominational Connections Ministry Team has requested that we continue our collection for Hurricane Dorian relief. Please make a generous contribution to help UUSC deliver critically needed support to those in the Bahamas affected by Hurricane Dorian. Their unique approach to crisis response includes working with local groups to provide relief long after the media's attention has moved on.

Please make checks payable to UUSC with Hurricane Dorian Crisis Response on the memo line. Thank you for your generosity.
Fair Trade Coffee and Chocolate Bars
Prices Reduced on Select Items
Throughout October, selected Fair Trade coffee and chocolate bars, identified by a red label, are on sale at deeply discounted prices. Selected coffee items, regularly priced at $7 and $7.75, are on sale for $5. The sale price for chocolate bars is $2, down from $2.75. Items on sale are past the “best by” date but are fully useable, fresh, and flavorful.
The after church sales area is operated by the Denominational Connections Ministry Team. The products are obtained from Equal Exchange, a worker cooperative based in Massachusetts that distributes tea, coffee, chocolate and other items grown on small family farms that follow ecologically responsible practices. Proceeds from sales help fund the activities of the Ministry Team.
