Weekly Word of Wisdom

Friends, I think it is so very important to our faith lives to immerse ourselves as often as we can in God’s Word. I read a daily devotional to help me with this. I recommend that you find one and give it a try. It has helped to re-center me in God through the years when life becomes de-stabilizing. It is with this in mind that I plan to share some of what I have heard and focused on each week with the hope that it will be helpful to you as well. But get your Bibles open! God’s Word may have been written thousands of years ago but it is just as alive today and will speak to us, God’s beloved Creation.

So the Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the Lord is a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for his help. – Isaiah 30: 18

Friends I do not wait well. If there is a problem in my life, I want it resolved as soon as possible. I am probably not alone in this. But there will be problems we will face that have no immediate solution. Rushing to get an answer to deep spiritual unrest may leave us feeling even more empty than when we started. Try as we might, some things we just don’t have the power to make better. Sometimes we will have to sit in the mess. But in the meantime, take heart. What troubles us does not go by unnoticed by our Lord and Savior.

We live in a world dictated by time. We have a past, a present and a future. God is beyond such limitations. The struggles of our hearts, even if they originated years ago, they are not a part of the forgotten past for God. The things we need God’s help with most are eternally present to God. And though God’s response may not be as quick as I would like, God’s help is coming. In that we can be certain. I love you all. Bill

News and Opportunities to Serve

October Mission Challenge

This month, we will be focusing on College Care Packages. Check out the table (coming October 6) to see what items are being collected. We will also be collecting money to help cover shipping costs for the packages.

Children's Christmas Musical

For this year's musical, we have decided on "The Christmas County Spelling Bee" - it will be so much fun for our kids to perform! We will have an interest meeting on Sunday, Oct. 6 immediately following the Sunday School hour at noon. This should only take around 10 minutes. Our first listen-through/practice will be the following Sunday, October 13 from 11am-noon in the FFC/gym (or possibly in the Youth Room).

We are asking that all participants be in at least Kindergarten for this school year. If your child(ren) are interested in a speaking part and/or solo this year, we will have forms to fill out. We will do our best to accommodate all requests. Please let me know if you prefer a flash drive or a CD for your family to listen to and learn the songs. If you are planning to participate and CANNOT make it this Sunday, PLEASE let Bethany know of your interest so we can confirm numbers and start to assign parts.

College Care Packages

Calling all college students and parents of college students! We would love to show our college students that their church family is still here for them even if they are away at college or in the military. Young adulthood can often be a time of great change and transition and so it is important for those in that stage of life to know that their church family is supporting and uplifting them. If you have a student that is either in college or the military, please email the office or Jen with their name, mailing address, and a picture of them by October 20th.

Greeters

We would like to renew our ministry of greeting members and visitors to our church each Sunday. This ministry is for anyone. We are looking for singles, couples and families who enjoy saying hello and helping direct visitors with basic questions about our church like, “Where are the restrooms?” and “Where is the sanctuary?”.

We will need people at both the main door and the side entrance who are willing to be at church 15 minutes before the service starts and remain there 5 minutes after the service begins so all are welcomed. You can serve monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly and at your convenience! For those who are interested, there is a sign-up sheet at the welcome table and Jo Quandt or I will be there to help answer any questions. After that, you will receive a link to “Sign-up Genius” so that you can choose the Sundays you would like to serve. If you prefer to sign up with Katie Constantine, our Office Administrator, you can do so in the church office during the week! Our target date to begin is November 3. Thank you for helping to create fellowship and welcoming new friends in Jesus Christ!

This week

We are continuing on in our series about belonging and identity. This week we are going to look at materialism and the lie that we often believe that we are what we have. We will talk about how new and more doesn't always equal better. We will look at the rich young ruler from Mark 10 and talk about how putting our stuff (or anything) before God goes against what God is calling us to do. We will talk about being content with what we have and not letting our stuff define us.

Copley/Revere Game

We are in the planning phases of putting together a tailgate for the Copley Revere football game. We will tailgate at the Copley High School parking lot on Friday, Oct 18th. This is a church wide event and if you would like to be involved with this please let me know.

Christmas Program

If your teen is interested in being in the Christmas musical there will be an informational meeting this Sunday after Sunday School. Please see Bethany Saris or Milissa Cern for more information. This is a great program and an awesome way for teens and kids to work together to share the love of Christ during the Christmas season.

October Mission

We have started a Pen Pal relationship with some residents and staff living or working at Copley Place Senior Living Facility in the Montrose area. We started off the project with sending them individualized posters of each child to be matched with a Pen Pal. This week each child will get a special surprise from their Pen Pal they were matched with!

October we will also be collecting gently used towels, blankets and flat sheets to be given to One Of A Kind Pets rescue facility. We would love for the congregation to add to our donations!

Chapel Lesson

Our Chapel Lesson this Wednesday with Ms. Sharon is all about Daniel and those Lions. We will dress-up and act out the story that hopefully we can share with our families on video. Peek in Creation Station after church and see our interactive Bible Story that has come to life!

Investing Ourselves in Christ 2024 Stewardship

Did you know that you can receive a tax benefit from a contribution to the church even if you do not itemize on your tax return?

Yes, you can through a Qualified Charitable Distribution. If you are at least 70 ½, you can have up to $100,000 annually distributed directly from your IRA to the church and have that otherwise taxable income be tax free. If you do not need the money from your required minimum distributions from your IRA, consider giving to the church and receive a tax benefit while helping the ministry of the church at the same time! Please consult your tax advisor for limitations and determining non-taxable portions of IRA.
