A Message from the Principal of Academics: |
Standardized Testing and Beyond
Standardized testing is a central and controversial part of education. Like most educators, I have mixed feelings about these exams. They intend to help assess student learning and progress and while standardized tests provide useful data, they often fail to capture the full scope of student abilities. Many students have unique talents, learning styles, and strengths that go unnoticed in these tests, which typically prioritize a narrow range of skills. Critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving—key aspects of real-world success—often get lost in the standardized format. Moreover, some students excel in non-traditional ways that are not reflected in these assessments, making them a less holistic measure of ability.
People also misunderstand the differences between the different types of tests. Standardized tests generally fall into two categories: Achievement vs. Aptitude. Achievement tests measure what students have already learned in specific subjects, helping gauge their current performance. Aptitude tests assess broader cognitive skills, predicting future academic potential and readiness for college. In the college entrance exam world, the ACT is an achievement test while the SAT is an aptitude test—although even the SAT has evolved over time and now includes both aptitude and achievement components.
At Carondelet, we use a variety of tests for different purposes and grade levels.
Breakdown of Types of Tests We Offer:
-
PSAT (Juniors): A practice test for the SAT that evaluates reading, writing, and math skills, while also serving as a qualifier for the National Merit Scholarship.
-
NWEA MAP (Freshmen and Sophomores): A growth-focused assessment that tracks progress in math, reading, and language skills. Adaptive in nature, meaning it adjusts question difficulty based on student responses. This test is designed to measure where a student is currently at, rather than compare them to a set standard.
-
AP Tests (Sophomores through Seniors): Subject-specific exams covering college-level material in areas like history, science, and English. While a strong score may earn college credit, the true value of AP classes lies in the depth of learning and intellectual challenge provided by the course itself, rather than the final exam outcome.
While having information about the what and why behind our standardized testing system, I think the biggest takeaway is to understand that these tests are both important AND only one piece of a much larger puzzle. Einstein is often credited with saying "Education is what remains after you have forgotten everything you learned in school." Students will maybe not remember exactly what quorum sensing* is 10 years past taking AP Bio or the 1854 Ostend Manifesto** from AP US History, but they will have developed the ability to critically analyze information and make sophisticated connections when given data. We must also remember that as much of their education will come from experiences they have outside of the classroom, on the field, on stage, in clubs, councils, in retreats, and through prayerful reflection. The goal of our Carondelet education is to teach students to both learn and unlearn while holding true to their faith values. These skills grow experientially in and out of class. We challenge them to embrace Jean-Pierre Médaille's Maxim 30 “Do not be attached to any particular thing or way of doing things” as the sign of a good education is a flexible and empathic mind.

*quorum sensing, a process used by bacteria to communicate and coordinate behavior based on population density. This can influence activities like biofilm formation and virulence, making it a fascinating aspect of microbiology often overlooked in more general biology courses.
**The Ostend Manifesto (1854), a secret proposal by U.S. diplomats to purchase Cuba from Spain, with the idea of expanding slavery. The plan was leaked and caused a political firestorm, becoming a little-known precursor to Civil War tensions.

We are beginning a concerted effort to address the issue of skirt and short length. Skirts and shorts should fall approximately four inches above the knee. This means that hems should fall below fingertips when arms are relaxed at the sides and hems should always fall below shirts and outerwear tops.
Starting Thursday, October 17, students with three or more uniform violations related to skirt/short length will temporarily lose skirt/short privileges. We ask that parents/guardians have a conversation with their students regarding skirt/short length and confirm that their student’s uniform pieces meet our length requirements.
Reach out to Dean Main or view the recent communication for more information.

End of First Quarter
This week marks the end of the first quarter. Progress reports will be emailed to students and families on Tuesday, October 8. Quarter grades do get locked into the system. Quarter report cards are both official hard stops in our grades AND also not really a part of the permanent record as our transcripts only report semester grades. It provides a midpoint for us to track progress on the semester journey.
Peer Tutors available
NHS Peer Tutoring Program is up and running for this school year! With over 100 members of the National Honor Society (NHS) participating, we have a wide variety of students with expertise in multiple subjects and academic levels who are eager to assist their peers. Need A Tutor? (Form for any student looking for a peer tutor). Additionally, NHS tutors will be present at PowerLab every Monday through Thursday in the Library. If you have a student who would benefit from extra help, please remind them that a tutor specializing in Science, Math, and Language Arts will be available each day during PowerLab.
Information About Upcoming PSAT for Juniors
Juniors will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday, October 16. The PSAT is a practice run for the SAT and can help students strategize for their college application process. This is the second year that the PSAT will be fully online. This is also a practice run for AP testing with many tests moving online this year.
This means, our juniors need to get their school-issued iPads ready to go! Families will receive more communication about this so you can prepare and make sure your students have everything ready for a smooth testing experience.
Free Tool for Test Prep
Since standardized testing is on the agenda, we want to acknowledge that this is not a student’s favorite thing. Sadly, getting used to the tests and being proactive is key. Many families opt to pay for outside crash courses. Carondelet provides a free resource open to all students for PSAT/SAT/ACT practice. It is Albert.io. Students log in using their Carondelet email. Here are some direct links for some diagnostics through the system.
