Fall Leaf Collection Begins Oct. 15

Free Leaf pick-up will run October 15 through December 17, on your regular refuse day.

Leaves ONLY may be placed in kraft yardwaste bags or a can with a Yardwaste Identification Label attached, and placed at the curb with no sticker needed. Plastic bags ARE NOT allowed.

All other yardwaste must still have a garbage sticker attached. Leaves MAY NOT be raked into the street. This causes flooding problems For you and your neighbors!
Branch Collection: Oct. 25-29

The City of Darien offers FREE BRANCH PICKUP for residents. The final collection will be the week of October 25-29. To help keep the streets clean and our crews on schedule, please stack the branches neatly by the curb on the Sunday before the pickup week. The chipper can accept branches up to 6” in diameter. Please do not tie the branches or put in garbage cans. All other yard waste such as grass clippings and flowers should be disposed of through our yard waste program with Waste Management. Please contact Municipal Services at 630-353-8105 with any questions.
September Mosquito Report

Northeastern Illinois remains in an abnormally dry to severe drought condition. The drought conditions have curtailed the impact of the floodwater mosquito in 2021. On the other hand, the Culex mosquito, the disease vector of WNV, flourishes under stagnant water and drought conditions. Clarke Mosquito Report.
West Nile Virus: High Risk

The Health Department’s Personal Protection Index (PPI) remains at Level 3 (high risk) because of the number of mosquito batches testing positive for WNV. Level 3 indicates high numbers of infected mosquitoes in most areas, and multiple human cases of WNV disease in DuPage County. View the PPI.

West Nile Virus (WNV) Prevention -
Follow the 4 Ds of Defense:
  • DRAIN: Drain those items that collect standing water around your home, yard or business. Scrub and refill pet water dishes and bird baths regularly.
  • DEFEND: Use an insect repellent containing DEET when outdoors and reapply according to directions.
  • DRESS: Wear long pants, long sleeves and closed toe shoes when outside to cover the skin.
  • DAWN & DUSK: Wear repellent if outdoors during these prime times for mosquito activity.
Trick-or-Treating and Halloween Festivities

The City does not have established trick-or-treating hours but recommends trick-of-treating during daylight hours.

Follow these tips for a safe Halloween:
  • If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape to their costumes and bags, or give them glow sticks
  • Opt for nontoxic Halloween makeup over masks, which can obscure vision; always test makeup in a small area first to see if any irritation develops
  • A responsible adult should accompany young children on the neighborhood rounds
  • Children and adults are reminded to put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don't run, across the street
  • Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs

Check out the Darien Park District's Halloween for Ghouls & Goblins on Thursday, October 28 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm. at the Darien Park District Community Center. No tricks, just treats & lots of fun at our Halloween party for all 2-5-year-olds. An adult needs to come along to help your child with the activities, games & crafts. Children should come dressed in their costumes. Learn More.
