From the Desk of Fr. Mike Nacius, Pastor
-------Last weekend, I shared excerpts from the USCCB Examination of Conscience in Light of Catholic Social Teaching. The examination is broken down into the following categories: Life and Dignity of the Human Person, Call to Family, Community and Participation, Rights and Responsibilities, Option for the Poor and Vulnerable, The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers, Solidarity, and Care for God’s Creation. Today I am sharing the remaining three categories with the parish. May we reflect on the Holy Spirit guiding us in our respect for all life as followers of Jesus.

Examination of Conscience in Light of Catholic Social Teaching – Part 2
The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers
As a worker, do I give my employer a fair day’s work for my wages? As an owner, do I treat workers fairly?

Do I treat all workers with whom I interact with respect, no matter their position or class?

Do I support the rights of all workers to adequate wages, health insurance, vacation, and sick leave? Do I affirm their right to form or join unions or worker associations?

Do my purchasing choices take into account the hands involved in the production of what I buy? When possible, do I buy products produced by workers whose rights and dignity were respected?

Solidarity
Does the way I spend my time reflect a genuine concern for others?

Is solidarity incorporated into my prayer and spirituality? Do I lift up vulnerable people throughout the world in my prayer, or is it reserved for only my personal concerns?

Am I attentive only to my local neighbors or also those across the globe?

Do I see all members of the human family as my brothers and sisters?

Care for God’s Creation
Do I live out my responsibility to care for God’s creation?

Do I see my care for creation as connected to my concern for poor persons, who are most at risk from environmental problems?

Do I litter? Live wastefully? Use energy too freely? Are there ways I could reduce consumption in my life?

Are there ways I could change my daily practices and those of my family, school, workplace, or community to better conserve the earth’s resources for future generations?

-------Many thanks to all who are participating in the Baby Bottle Project. Additional baby bottles are available at the entrances to the church. You may return them to the Parish Office or church any time during the month of October. On October 29 and 30 parishioners are invited to donate in support of Catholic Charities’ Refugee Ministry. Thanks for your support of this very important need. May God guide and bless us with hearts of charity and concern for our neighbor.

-------Plans are underway for a delicious Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, October 30 and the opportunity will also be offered to help Pack the Pantry with a food drive for our Sharing Parish, Most Blessed Trinity, the same weekend (October 29 and 30). More details will be available on our website and upcoming bulletins.

-------May God guide and bless us with hearts of charity and concern for our neighbor,

Seeking Children’s Liturgy of the Word Volunteers
Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) is looking for a few more Adult Leaders to bring back this important ministry. Throughout the school year, St. Mary’s offers CLOW at the 10:00am Mass for children age 4 through fifth grade. It has been a gift to the parish and to the families whose children participate in it. Dedicated catechists lead this age-appropriate time for children to understand the Sunday Scriptures and to reflect on how they are called to live the message in their day to day activities. Please consider being a part of this beautiful ministry of St. Mary’s.
Sacramental Preparation Guidelines
Preparing for Sacraments offers an opportunity for children and our youth to grow in their knowledge of our faith, relationship with God and strengthens our Church. This is a special time for families to help prepare their children by praying together, sharing in faith discussions, and helping them understand the graces that will be freely given by God through these Sacramental celebrations.

The Archdiocese of Chicago has offered guidelines to parishes in order to help prepare children, and their families, in the following Sacraments:

  • First Reconciliation/First Communion: Two-year prep period, beginning in the 1st grade. Sacraments are celebrated during children’s second-year, which is considered the immediate preparation period. Our parish offers 1st Year Classes (with 1st & 2nd Grade Students) and 2nd Year [Immediate Prep] (with 2nd and 3rd Grade Students).

  • Confirmation: In our parish we offer a three-year prep period, beginning in 6th grade. Immediate Preparation takes place during your youth’s 8th grade year.

If you have a child(ren) who have not received the Sacraments of Baptism (over the age of 7), First Reconciliation (3rd grade or above), First Communion (3rd grade or above) or have not had the opportunity to prepare for Confirmation beginning in grade 6, please contact the Religious Education Office and explore how we can provide support to your family in helping your children receive these important Sacraments.

STEWARDSHIP
“Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” ---------LUKE 17:18
Most of us live “easy” lives. We have food, shelter and clothing. We go on vacation every year and own a car or two. Most of us take this all for granted. Did you ever notice that people with the least amount of possessions are usually the most grateful? Shouldn’t this be the other way around? Take time every day and thank God for all He has given you.
