Student Social Justice Quilts on National Tour
Last year, with the help of the class of 1963, a new partnership was established between SJSA, the Social Justice Sewing Academy, and Poly. SJSA traveled from California and Boston to work with 180 Poly students to construct multiple Social Justice Quilts. Afterwards, three of our AP Studio artists were flown to California over the summer for an all expenses paid trip to make quilts and tour California with the SJSA.

These quilts, and the quilts from our AP students, empowered student voice through the arts about issues pertinent to their lives as young people in Baltimore. All of the quilts are on a national tour and have been and will continue to be displayed in multiple venues, galleries, and museums across the country. They currently are on display Santa Clara California. Check out more photos here!
JROTC Maintains Special Campus Legacy
The cadets of the Poly JROTC program, led by Colonel Gina Humble and Senior Master Sergeant Randy Letschin '72, perform many acts of service for Polytechnic and the community. Pictured here they are seen performing their weekly maintenance of the landscaped area in the Veterans Walk in the front of the Poly campus. This project, which the cadets volunteered to take on, has them performing weekly weeding and cleaning in this extensively landscaped space. The JROTC program performs many of it's exercises here and their respect for both the area and the funding by the Class of 1953, which made this landscaping possible, led them to volunteer for this much needed and very time-consuming job.

Everyone coming to campus sees this area and it presents a very welcoming scene for our faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Thank you to the JROTC program leaders and cadets for taking on this and many other challenges!

Alumni Corner: Bria Macklin '11
A fourth-year PhD candidate at The Johns Hopkins University, Bria Macklin '11 recently earned a NIH fellowship for work with stem-cell derived vascular cells. Today, when someone experiences heart disease, surgeons often use stents and grafts to bypass the diseased blood vessels. While helpful, this approach is a temporary solution; not one that allows the vasculature to recover its function. Macklin's research is laying the groundwork toward a long-term goal of deriving vascular cells from stem cells, growing the vessels in vitro, and then implanting or injecting them into patients to replace the diseased vasculature. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer in the U.S., making this research monumental in scope.

Recalling her days at BPI, Macklin notes "I started my research career in the research practicum program at Poly, which I am forever grateful for." Congratulations, Bria! Your contribution to this ground breaking field makes Poly so very proud. To read more about Bria's incredible work, click here.
