Graduating Students Applying for OPT

Fall 2018 Graduates:
All students who will be graduating in the Fall 2018 semester and are planning to apply for Optional Practical Training  (OPT) will become eligible to submit applications to USCIS 90 days prior to the completion of their program of study. ISSS will start accepting OPT I-20 applications on September 24, 2018. This is 100 days prior to your program completion date to account for internal and USCIS processing times. We recommend that you apply within the 90 days before your program end date, which is between  October 2 and December 31 if you're graduating in fall 2018.  OPT Application

Note:  ISSS is no longer collecting I-765s upon OPT application submission.

PowerPoint Guidance for New I-765 Form

If you will be applying for OPT this fall, please note that there is a new version of the I-765 form, which is now 7 pages long. However, in order to make this easier to complete for students, ISSS has developed a step-by-step instructional guide on how to fill out the new version of the  I-765 properly.

Please click on the following link to access the PowerPoint presentation on pre- and post-completion OPT from ISSS:  I-765 PowerPoint Guidelines

CPT Extensions for the Same Semester

We no longer allow students to change employers during the same semester for CPT. However, if you will be extending the length of your job offer for the same employer while on your current CPT authorization, this will be possible. On Friday, October 5, ISSS will publish an extension form on our website that you can fill out and submit.

NEW SCAM ALERT

Unfortunately, many F-1 and J-1 international students have been common targets for scams. Scams are fraudulent or deceptive services that try to acquire money from you illegally. If you feel that you have been a victim of a scam, please contact the police immediately.

The most recent scam that has been brought to our attention involves telephone scammers posing as 911 dispatchers who demand money because of a contrived criminal offense. In some instances, they have requested students to transfer money onto a Google Play card.  Please do not acquiesce to their demands as most government agencies will not call you should they need to communicate with you. In the event that they need to contact you, they will most likely send you written correspondence via post. Providing such information can result in severe financial loss or identity theft.  If you feel you've been a victim of this particular scam, please file a police report immediately with UPD. Scams can include (but are not limited to):

Banking scams

IRS impostor scams

USCIS impostor scams

911 impostor scams

Investment scams

Charity scams

Pyramid schemes

Lottery and sweepstakes scams

Telephone scams

Please visit the following website:  usa.gov  to obtain the most recent and complete list of scams. You should always be cautious and never give out your social security number, passport number, or bank ac count information to an unverified source or organization. Please also make sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date and you consistently change your passwords.

If you are unsure whether you are being targeted for a scam, you can also talk to us any time about this very important subject and we could help.
