Saint Matthew’s Liturgical Ministry Day
The Mass is a profound and transformative experience in which we are all called to participate. We will explore many ways to deepen our appreciation and understanding of this matchless gift from God. This morning of reflection is free and open to anyone interested in growing in knowledge and appreciation of the Mass, but especially for those who exercise a liturgical ministry.
Our presenter this year will be Rita Ferrone, an independent scholar, writer, and speaker on issues of liturgy and catechesis in the Roman Catholic Church. She is the author of several books on liturgy, including a Pastoral Guide to Pope Francis's Desiderio Desideravi (Liturgical Press).
Saturday, October 19, from 9am to Noon. We will meet in St. Anthony's Chapel. Please RSVP Tom Stehle tstehle@stmatthewscathedral.org or call 202-587-5141.

WOMEN IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
In Scripture we encounter God and come to know God’s people. Join us for a journey through Israel’s captivity, freedom and tribal period and explore the perspectives of some of the earliest women in salvation history.
We’ll be using the Little Rock Scripture Study Guide, Women in the Old Testament, Part One (available from Liturgical Press).
Our small-group discussions will take place on five Monday evenings at 7pm, beginning Monday, October 21st.
The meetings will be conducted from the comfort of your homes, as we will gather “virtually” using the Zoom application. We hope you’ll be interested in joining these conversations! If so, please leave your name and contact information at cathedralmondaybiblestudy@gmail.com.

How Has the Pandemic Affected your Faith Life?
Our parish is participating in an interfaith survey designed by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate, (CARA), at Georgetown University, to help gauge how the pandemic has affected your faith life, worship life, and spirituality. It is designed to be responded to by any adult who attends Mass at the parish (even if you are a first-time visitor) or participates in parish life. We will be sharing this link for you to take the survey until the end of October. It will help us at the parish to better meet your needs, so we encourage you to respond. You can access the survey HERE. Your participation is greatly appreciated!

Spiritual Readings
Selected by Fr. Joe McHenry
From a sermon by St. Bernard
(Selection for Our Lady of the Rosary, October 7)
The Word was made flesh and even now dwells among us. It is by faith that he dwells in our hearts, in our memory, our intellect and penetrates even into our imagination. What concept could man have of God if he did not first fashion an image of him in his heart? By nature incomprehensible and inaccessible, he was invisible and unthinkable, but now he wished to be understood, to be seen and thought of.
But how, you ask, was this done? He lay in a manger and rested on a virgin’s breast, preached on a mountain, and spent the night in prayer. He hung on a cross, grew pale in death, and roamed free among the dead and ruled over those in hell. He rose again on the third day, and showed the apostles the wounds of the nails, the signs of victory; and finally in their presence he ascended to the sanctuary of heaven.
How can we not contemplate this story in truth, piety and holiness? Whatever of all this I consider, it is God I am considering; in all this he is my God. I have said it is wise to meditate on these truths, and I have thought it right to recall the abundant sweetness, given by the fruits of this priestly root; and Mary, drawing abundantly from heaven, has caused this sweetness to overflow for us.
