Indianhead Community Action Agency, Inc. (ICAA) was founded in 1966 as part of the War on Poverty and Economic Opportunity Act. Throughout the years, the programs and services offered by ICAA have changed, but our mission has remained the same: to assist individuals in achieving self-sufficiency by providing the resources, education and services necessary to develop healthy families, sustainable communities and strong local businesses.
While some of ICAA's programs serve additional counties in Northwest Wisconsin, all of our programs serve six core counties (Burnett, Clark, Rusk, Sawyer, Taylor, and Washburn). ICAA programs cover a wide range of services for all ages including: Small Business Development, Head Start, Food Pantries, Legal Assistance for Victims, Skilled Nursing, Supportive Services for Veteran Families, Youth Development and Prevention Services, and more!
Recently, our Community Services Director sat down for a conversation with Lindrith and Buffy Tsoodle. Lindrith served in the Army in the early 1980s, stationed at the NATO post near the Czech/Russian boarder. In January 2018, the Tsoodles encountered some difficult times and found themselves living out of their truck with nowhere to go. The couple was referred to our Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) case manager at ICAA’s Connections Store in Sawyer County. Once our case manager realized that Lindrith and Buffy qualified for SSVF services, they were all able to work together to find the couple affordable housing. The SSVF grant helped provide a few months’ rent and the Connections store helped provide emergency food and clothing. This boost was just what the Tsoodle’s needed to get back on their feet. Today, they have permanent housing and Lindrith has a full time job. They both stop in to visit at the ICAA’s Sawyer Connections store occasionally and Buffy volunteers there from time to time.
Successes like this are what bring us to work each day. On any given day we might be able to help a small business get its start, provide quality education to a child, enable a senior to stay longer in their home, or give support to a domestic abuse survivor. To learn more about the programs and services offered by ICAA or ways you can get involved visit us online at www.indianheadcaa.org or call us at 715-532-4222.
