Quote of the Month:
"I learned that even the U.S. has challenges and people are facing problems just like everywhere else in the world. I also learned there are many generous people who are ready to share what they have in order to build peace."

Event Recap: Moving Stories
On September 27th, IVCLA hosted a full-day community forum addressing the global issue of human migration. Set against the back drop of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee , a cultural gem of South Central Los Angeles, Moving Stories offered a comprehensive look at the causes and consequences of human migration and highlighted the economic and cultural contributions made by immigrants and refugees to the Los Angeles region and beyond. The goal of the event was to combat misinformation by providing informed dialogue about human migration and offer an opportunity for audience members to connect with each other to promote a community of welcoming in Los Angeles.

The morning session featured panelists Patricia Ortiz, Program Director at Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project , Rigoberto Reyes, Acting Executive Director of L.A. County Office of Immigrant Affairs , and Martin Zogg, Executive Director of the International Rescue Committee in Los Angeles , and was moderated by Elle Fersan, Director of USC Gould School of Law Initiative on Immigrants and Global Migration. Lunch was catered by Flavors from Afar, a program started by the Tiyya Foundation that provides employment opportunities for refugee chefs. The delicious meal featured cuisine from Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia and Syria. Amara Barroeta, owner of Amara Chocolate and Coffee Cafe , moderated a lunch conversation with Malia Hamza, caretaker and chef from Somalia, Meymuna Hussein-Cattan, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Tiyya Foundation, and Sokthea Phay, Community Operations Director at the YMCA of Greater Long Beach . Following lunch, an exhibit hall offered an opportunity for organizations to showcase their work assisting refugee and immigrant populations and connect with each other to further their impact.

Welcome New Intern!
Abraham Aguilar is thrilled to be working as IVCLA’s intern this Fall. He is a hard-working senior at the UCLA-Community School, gearing up to graduate this school year with ambitious goals. Currently, he is participating in an internship through his school that prepares students for college, career, and engaged citizenship. In the program, students and teachers are gathered to think critically about the world, engage as agents of social change, and promote democratic practices. As an intern, Abraham wants to gain a better understanding of different languages and cultures around the world and miles away from Los Angeles. His goals are to attend college, major in Political Science, and minor in International Relations. He also hopes to have a career that will allow him to help unify different cultures and communities so that all can gain peace and equal rights.

Los Angeles - Lusaka: A Partnership for Progress
Lidia Mongerie-Brown was recently honored for her service with the Los Angeles - Lusaka Sister City Committee. During her time with LA-Lusaka SCC, she served four terms as Project Director and oversaw the implementation of four major development projects in Lusaka, including the Micro-Finance Project for Women, The Chaisa Compound Clean Water Project for Families, The Youth to School Project for Children and The Mobility for All Project for Seniors (still in the development phase). Beginning in 2011, the Micro-Finance Project for Women supported 10 entrepreneurs and helped develop businesses in nine areas of Zambia. Now, the program supports more than fifty women entrepreneurs. The Chaisa Compound Clean Water Project, funded in 2013, allowed for the implementation of two water units to provide clean drinking water for families in Chaisa Compound. The Youth to School Project helps increase enrollment, funds school meals and provides uniforms, rain boots and school supplies to sponsored students.
On her most recent trip to Zambia, Lidia met with the first Lady of the Republic of Zambia, Her Excellency Esther Lungu, to advance future LA-Lusaka SCC projects. The work of the LA-Lusaka SCC continues to promote strong cultural relations, economic development and partnerships that further peace and prosperity, and is a model to Sister City relationships around the world.
