Quote of the Month:
“The meeting sessions in LA were very educational and direct. I was able to get a better understanding as to why certain things were conducted the way they do. I will remember the people and places visited and the enjoyable and educational time.”

Welcome Our New Communications & Events Coordinator!
|
|
Hello IVCLA friends!
My name is Andrea Martinez and I am very excited to become a part of the IVCLA team as the new Communications and Events Coordinator! I gradua
ted from UCLA in 2018 with a bachelor's degree in Political Science, with a concentration in International Relations.
After graduation I was fortunate enough to work and gain new experiences working at my first non-profit organization. There, I had the chance to meet industry executives, writers, and filmmakers who were using inspirational creative outlets to share their stories, which sparked my passion in learning more about other cultures.
I am extremely grateful for the wonderful people I have met since I started at IVCLA and the words of wisdom shared at last month's Women in Diplomacy Luncheon. As a child of an immigrant mother, I truly recognize the importance of respecting other cultures and learning from one another as we work together in making positive contributions, not only within our country, but throughout the globe. I look forward to meeting more of you as IVCLA continues in our mission to create international understandings and cooperation between the Los Angeles area and the rest of the world!

IVCLA Welcomes Azerbaijani Filmmakers

Consul General of Azerbaijan, the Honorable Nasimi Aghayev (center), with IVCLA President, Janet Elliott (center right), IVCLA Sponsor, Andrea D'Orazio, and USC Public Dipomat in Residence, Elizabeth McKay (center left back and front row) joined by several of the Azerbaijani filmmakers.

Filmmaking is a powerful medium for promoting free and independent expression around the world and an important International Visitors Leadership Program topic. IVCLA was honored to arrange a program on this topic for nine Azerbaijan filmmakers last month. Their meetings included
Paramount Studios, the
USC School of Cinematic Arts - American Film Showcase, and the
American Film Institute
. IVCLA also arranged a meeting with
Girl Rising
producer Martha Adams. Girl Rising uses the power of storytelling to change the way the world values girls and their education.
A reception hosted by the Consulate of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles was a special treat on the final evening of their program. Guests learned about Azerbaijan’s long history of filmmaking beginning in 1898, and their new film industry developing since they gained political independence in 1991. The filmmakers we had the opportunity to meet will certainly play an important role as the Azerbaijani film industry continues to grow.

Disaster preparedness experts from
Fiji, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka
were given a warm L.A. welcome at their home hospitality dinner with IVCLA Board Member
Wendy Gladney
.
Last month the group was in Los Angeles on a program to discuss Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management.Their Home Hospitality experience gave them the opportunity to speak candidly and make new friends. As one of the visitors shared with us, “Miss Wendy hosted a delicious dinner and we were welcomed by her, along with her cousin and neighbors. We discussed our cultures and how what the social media is showing on both sides is a completely negative face of what we really are. The love and the respect and the interest we had in the discussion was memorable.”
