2023 Property Tax Levy

A public hearing was held at the September 18 City Council meeting on the proposed 2023 property tax levy for the City of Lee’s Summit. Three components make up the total property tax levy, the General Operating Levy, Parks and Recreation Levy and Debt Service Levy.

The Missouri Hancock Amendment limits the amount of property tax local governments can collect by using revenue-neutral provisions. The City is allowed to collect the same amount of revenue collected on property in the prior year and can increase it by he lower of 5% or the consumer price index percentage (inflation). With a consumer price index of 7% this year, the City will use the 5% increase.

The total assessed value for 2023 is 22.6% over 2022. The City proposed rolling back the tax levy to 1.28% on $100 of assessed valuation. This is a decrease of 0.14% percent from 2022’s 1.42% tax levy.

Following the public hearing, the City Council approved an ordinance setting the City’s portion of the tax levy at 1.28%.
