The 2021 legislative session will look different from years past and WCAAP will be creative and dynamic advocating for all of Washington's children and families. It's more important than ever for our pediatric health care community to provide a voice for children as our state's policies and budget priorities are being decided and access to legislators changes during the pandemic.

Practices Needed to Inform Behavioral Health Advocacy
|
WCAAP is working with University of Washington's Masters in Health Administration students to profile behavioral health care provided in primary care for children in Washington. The report will help advance our work with legislators in the 2021 session to improve behavioral health access for kids.
You can help! We are looking for primary care pediatric and family medicine practices that do not have embedded behavioral health professionals to help illustrate current state of behavioral health services.

We are three Washington state Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics fellows who have created a petition to the American Board of Pediatrics to include competencies centering racism. We had guidance and support in writing the petition from members of the AAP Minority Healthy Equity and Inclusion (MHEI) group and members of Society of Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics (SDBP) RACE-CARD group.

Vaccine Clinic Support for South King County

This year, clinics in South King County can make it easy for families to get influenza vaccinations or catch up on missed vaccinations by holding a pop-up or drive-through vaccine clinic. Many kids have gotten behind on needed vaccines during the pandemic and this is an easy way to catch them up!
Resources are available to help South King County pediatric clinics hold these drive-through or pop-up flu and catch-up vaccine clinics.

Knock Out Flu: Think of It as Essential

With both flu and COVID-19 expected to circulate this fall, it's more important than ever to get vaccinated against the flu. The Washington State Department of Health launched the Knock Out Flu: Think of It as Essential statewide media campaign on September 14 to encourage everyone 6-months and older to get their flu vaccine. The campaign will run through March 2021 and features TV, radio, and social media ads. Partners can also use a toolkit of companion materials (available in English and Spanish) to promote on their communication channels. The toolkits are ready now: coronavirus.wa.gov/partner-toolkit.

Early Support for Infants & Toddlers, Services during COVID-19

During COVID-19, the Early Support for Infants and Toddlers ( ESIT) Program continues to accept referrals and provide services virtually, through video conferencing and/or phone calls. Research shows that virtual services are as successful as in-person services (example study is here).

USDA Extends Waivers: WIC Continues to Provide Remote Services
|
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has extended the waivers that allow the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) to offer remote services to participants. This, the third extension, will continue as long as there is a declared national public health emergency. The waivers make it possible for Washington WIC to enroll new applicants, provide health screening, nutrition education and breastfeeding support, make referrals, and issue food benefits by phone or video chat.

WCAAP Offering Second Behavioral Health Education Series

Due to the overwhelming success of the first rapid BH education series, we are excited to announce we are hosting a second series this fall with an updated format. The series will be capped at 30 participants and will meet weekly from 7:00 to 8:00 AM, starting Friday, October 30, and ending Friday, November 20. The smaller group will allow for greater case-based learning and discussion. Dr. Bob Hilt and Dr. Rupin Thakkar will be co-facilitating the sessions, with Dr. Larry Wissow providing content support and materials. The Behavioral Health Toolbox for Families is a resource for families, parents, caregivers, and educators that helps them understand the behavioral health impacts of COVID-19 and what they can do to help. The toolbox provides an overview of the emotional impacts caused by disasters, covers symptoms and interventions by age group, provides tips and recommendations, and outlines how to practice self-care for parents and caregivers. It also has an appendix dedicated to providing tips for families of children and teens with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It is a simple and practical resource designed to help families, parents, caregivers, and educators navigate the behavioral health challenges of COVID-19.

Friday night lights won't be as bright this high school football season. And several extracurricular sports and activities typically scheduled in fall are being postponed to winter. To help ensure the safety of our children and student athletes, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, the governing body in the state of Washington, has modified the 2020-21 calendar to create four WIAA-sanctioned seasons. And while many students and parents may be frustrated with the change, this is in the best interest of the health of our youth and the wonderful communities who support them.

Sudden cardiac death is a rare occurrence, making it a challenge to get accurate numbers. Studies show different rates depending on what they're looking at, what ages they cover and whether or not the children survived. A general estimate is 1 occurrence in every 80,000 to 100,000 children per year. However, when accounting for sudden cardiac arrest, that number is lower, at approximately 1 in 20,000.

This month's resource comes from WCAAP Program Manager Ariana Salaiz: "As a parent, I have taken time to research meaningful ways to address race and racism with my son and found that this article and website as a whole are good resources.
by Madeleine Rogin, brings awareness to the biases we may be cultivating in our homes against Black people and how we must "actively work against these biases in order to help our children understand their role in fighting against racism." The call to action in this article is to know the difference between being nice and being anti-racist. Rogin points out the benefits of starting the conversation with our children by including the facts and background about race and skin color and what it means to be White. There are additional resources that you may find helpful in addressing anti-racism and discrimination on this website, including webinars, action guides and lists of children's books."

Child health researchers at Seattle Children's Research Institute are conducting a research study to learn how to best support children in being active and outdoors during the COVID-19 pandemic. This information will help create materials that pediatric health care providers can use to promote safe physical activity and outdoor time. Pediatric providers are invited to participate in a 60 minute 1:1 interview or focus group to provide input on what types of information are most needed and the most useful format for those materials. Kindering has radio broadcasts on El Rey 1360AM in Spanish for parents who have children with special health care needs, on the last Tuesday of the month at 3:00pm. The broadcast can be listened to on the internet here. The Washington State Medical Homes Partnership Project's Child Health Notes (CHNs) are brief newsletters, written by pediatric experts at the University of Washington in collaboration with content area specialists and community partners. The most recent CHN topics are Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Overview and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
From Ally to Antiracist: Using Psychological Science and Mindfulness to Cultivate Growth and Action - Weds 10/14 at 6:30PM. Jonathan W. Kanter, PhD, director of the UW Center for the Science of Social Connection, will review the science of bias and behavior change, including new research that emphasizes the important role mindfulness and acceptance practices can play in antiracism efforts.
