WCAAP has come a long way in the past four years. We've achieved some outstanding legislative wins for kids and improved child health by supporting you in your practice. Our membership has grown to an all-time high of 1149, and we've become a 501c3to better reflect our mission and to allow us to seek funding to sustain our work. All this has been possible thanks to our dedicated staff and impressive member involvement. In 2019, over 25% of WCAAP members were active in the chapter, participating in action alerts, events, or committees.

More than 25% of all youth will engage in some degree of school avoidance during their school years. This can range from complaints and threats to avoid school to actually missing school for extended periods of time. We call it school avoidance* when a student is not attending school to avoid an averse feeling, experience, or stimulus in that environment, despite being medically OK to attend.

Bowel and bladder dysfunction (BBD) in children is associated with decreased quality of life, impaired emotional and psychological well-being, and increased family and parent stress.1-8 While prevalence rates for BBD vary from 5.9%-18.7%1-5, it remains underdiagnosed and undertreated, and accounts for approximately 40% of referrals from primary care physicians to pediatric urology and gastroenterology at some SCH clinic sites.

My name is Bethany Jerabek and I am the legislative chair for the Washington State Chapter of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP). When I first joined the WCAAP, I found the legislative work invaluable. I have now had the privilege of working alongside the WCAAP legislative team and serving on the WCAAP legislative committee for the past year.

Member Spotlight: Megan McGeehan, MD
|

Megan McGeehan, MD is currently in her third year of residency at Seattle Children's. She grew up outside of Philadelphia, in Wallingford, Pennsylvania, surrounded by a huge family that includes 28 cousins. "We have an annual Christmas party and have recently been rocking the dance floor at lots of weddings," she says. Prior to coming to Seattle for residency, Dr. McGeehan attended medical school at Cornell in New York.

New campaign asks healthcare professionals to help elevate efforts to support immunization.
The Sabin Vaccine Institute has been amplifying the voices of parents who immunize through its Give Your Kids A Shot campaign on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Now Sabin invites physicians and other health care providers to participate in the campaign by answering the question, "What would you tell a parent about why they should vaccinate their kid?" To share your response, please complete a short submission form.
Join the HHS Office of Minority Health and the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion for a
bilingual Twitter chat in observance of Hispanic Heritage Month on October 9 at 11:00AM PT
. The chat will focus on health disparities and perceived barriers to health outcomes among the Hispanic/Latino community, how to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle and sharing bilingual resources. To participate, please use hashtag #HealthyLatinos.
Please consider participating in the survey, titled, "
Child Sex Trafficking Assessment Survey" to support a dissertation being conducted by a PhD student at Loyola University, Chicago. The specific aim of the proposed dissertation is to investigate U.S. pediatricians' training in and experience with the issue of child sex trafficking during medical school and beyond. The survey takes 10-15 minutes to complete.
The Fall/Winter WA Firearm Tragedy Prevention Network meeting is being held November 6, 11am-4pm in Vancouver, WA. The network aims to bring people, organizations and resources together in a non-political way to learn, network, share information and resources and identify areas of opportunity to work together as it relates to firearm tragedy prevention.
