2022 FAMILY NEWSLETTER
October 2021
Hello Class of 2022 Families!
William & Mary is bustling with activity! Thank you to all the families who celebrated Family Weekend on campus – it was an amazing weekend, and we were happy to connect with so many friends. If you weren’t able to join us, ask your student to text a quick picture of the changing foliage. Fall in Williamsburg is beautiful!

Three highlights this month include Homecoming Weekend (Oct. 7-10), Fall Break (Oct. 16-19), and the 10th anniversary of the TutorZone.

We hope you will tune into the TutorZone webinar on October 12th and learn about the fantastic resources offered to our students.

As always, please reach out with any questions and thank you for being part of our W&M community.

Sincerely,
Mary Hallahan Kushan ’85, P ’22 and Jeff Kushan ’85, P ’22

An Opening Convocation for the Books
On Friday, September 10th, the weather was magnificent and the student energy was palpable as our community gathered to celebrate Opening Convocation in-person. This year's event gave four semesters of new students, including the Class of 2024 and Class of 2025, the opportunity to experience a magical spin on this quintessential W&M welcome. We encourage you to watch the recorded ceremony, available on the Convocation webpage.
W&M Moves Up in U.S. News, Ranks in Top 10 for Public Universities
William & Mary moved up in the latest national and public university rankings by U.S. News & World Report and maintains a higher alumni giving rate than any other public national university, according to a report released today.

In the 2022 edition of its “Best Colleges” publication, U.S. News ranked William & Mary 10th (tied) among the nation’s public universities, up one spot from a year ago.

Indoor Mask Mandate Implemented Through End of Semester
Following discussions with the Public Health Advisory Team, William & Mary has extended the indoor masking policy to the end of the fall semester. The entire region and state remain at the highest levels of transmissibility yet, with some of the national models predicting cases will spike in late October or early November as we enter into the late fall and winter. Over the next couple of months, William & Mary will assess the extent to which evolving conditions will allow us to modify the masking policy for the spring 2022 semester.

Masks will not be required outdoors. They are recommended if you are in a large gathering outdoors. Vaccinated or not, if you feel a mask would afford you greater protection or help protect those around you, please do not hesitate to “mask up.” Please continue to consult our COVID-19 resource pages for any future updates and changes to our policies, as well as keeping an eye out for these updates.

At the Washington Center, we offer courses all year for students to explore different academic interests with professors from a variety of majors, get internship experience across dozens of industries, and explore D.C. while connecting with W&M alumni.

Hazing Prevention Coalition
The W&M Hazing Prevention Coalition recently recognized National Hazing Prevention Week. Recognition week activities were focused on what we can do to prevent hazing, things we should know and opportunities to become more active. The Hazing Prevention Coalition invites parents to review the resources that were promoted to all students during the recognition week.
Intelligent Lockers
Intelligent lockers will be delivered to the campus Post Office on October 11th. Intelligent lockers will allow students to pick up their mail without having to stand in line and after hours as well. Future parcel notifications will include a barcode with a unique code that opens each individual locker.
Did you know W&M does public history outside of Williamsburg?
William & Mary’s Highland is a historic site located outside Charlottesville, Virginia and most known as the home of W&M alumnus and 5th U.S. President, James Monroe. However, the site’s history does not begin or end with Monroe. Highland shares a multi-vocal narrative about the past, including the histories of marginalized communities, through its new exhibits, public education and community collaboration. In this work, Highland is proud to partner with a Council of Descendant Advisors, made up of individuals whose ancestors were enslaved at Highland. The site is open to the public daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and offers educational programs, history walking tours, and many other special events throughout the year. Admission to the site is free to W&M students, staff, and alumni. Interested in planning a visit or learning more about Highland? Visit our website and stay tuned for more announcements coming your way!
