It's that time again: Internal funding opportunities await

Over the years, the Office of Research has divvied out millions of dollars in research funding to faculty and students across the University of Cincinnati in support of their research and scholarly and creative activities.

Will this be your year to nab some funding?

We've got opportunities for faculty at any point in their career. For those continuing research in an area they are dedicated to, or embarking on something new. Applicants are just asked to come with a big idea that can change the world.

In our feature this month, meet some past winners of these awards (pictured above) and find out what big idea they're pushing forward. You’ll also get more detail on the following awards:

  • University Research Council Faculty Scholars Research Award: $25,000
  • University Research Council Graduate Student Stipend: Up to $7,500
  • Office of Research’s Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Advancement Program: Up to $10,000
  • Office of Research Collaborative Research Advancement Program Pilot Grants: $25,000
  • University Research Council Faculty Research Pivot Grants: $15,000

You can’t win, if you don’t apply.

New series helps faculty navigate DoD funding

The Research Development & Support Series is excited to feature a series of workshops focused on the Department of Defense basic and applied research funding opportunities, which are expected to top $100 billion in Fiscal Year 2021.

This four-part series has been put together for the UC research community who either have funding or are interested in pursuing new funding opportunities from the DoD.

Retired Army Colonel Scott Petersen, now working in the Office of Research, will partner with external consultants from Lewis Burke Associates, LLC, and Parallax, along with other UC staff and faculty with experience working with the DoD for these related but stand-alone events.

The events will explore how obtaining funding from DoD differs from other federal agencies; how to get started, grow relationships and find partners; how to navigate the process of submitting to the DoD, while providing tools and resources along the way for success.

The series kicks off Nov. 17, 2021, at noon, with DoD 101 - Why DoD? On Dec. 7, 2021, at noon, the series continues with DoD 201 - Where in DoD? These parts run 1.5 hours and are offered both in-person and on Zoom.

The remaining two parts of the series will be held in the spring semester with success stories from UC researchers and culminating with information about sensitive/classified research opportunities. Watch for an upcoming announcement on dates and times.

Thoughts about becoming a mentor? Or a better one?

The Office of Research, in collaboration with the Faculty Enrichment Center, is excited to present a four-part workshop that will focus on skills and tools for faculty and staff who mentor undergraduate and graduate student researchers.

While many research mentors report positive experiences with their mentees, negative experiences can arise, often unintentionally. This discipline-inclusive program uses interactive, evidence-based activities to help mentors develop productive, mutually satisfying relationships with their mentees. The modules include Introduction, Aligning Expectations, Creating an Inclusive Culture and Fostering Independence.

To attend session two, three and four, you must be present at the first session from 3-4:30 p.m. Oct. 20. Learn more.
