A Message from our District Chair

The Scouting Spirit is In the Air

Scouting is about so much more than earning badges, learning outdoor skills, or spending a weekend around a campfire. At its heart, Scouting is about building character, developing leadership, strengthening families, and inspiring young people to become the very best versions of themselves. It is about embracing the Scouting Spirit and, most importantly, putting that spirit into action through our words, our actions, and our service to others.

Recently, we had a wonderful opportunity to witness that spirit firsthand at our first Cub Scout Family Pioneer Family Weekend Campout at Baptist Camp Lebanon. With 490 Registered, what an incredible weekend it was! The energy and enthusiasm of our Cub Scouts, Scouts, siblings, adult leaders, and families made this inaugural event a tremendous success.

It was inspiring to see families come together to enjoy the outdoors, learn new skills, build friendships, and experience the traditions that make Scouting so special. From the excitement of our youngest Scouts to the dedication of our adult volunteers, the weekend reminded us that Scouting creates memories that last a lifetime while teaching lessons that shape a lifetime of character.

I want to extend my sincere thanks to every leader, unit, and family who participated and helped make this event possible. Your time, enthusiasm, and commitment to our young people are what keep Scouting strong in Hunterdon County. A special thank-you goes to Rich Refalo, Ed Szeliga, and Alex Fritz for their tremendous hard work, dedication, and leadership in bringing this event together. Their efforts helped create a welcoming, exciting, and memorable experience for everyone involved.

But the importance of this weekend goes beyond the fun and fellowship. It serves as a reminder of why Scouting matters and why we must continually put the principles of Scouting into practice.

The Scout Oath calls us to do our duty to God and our country, to help other people at all times, and to keep ourselves physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. The Scout Law challenges us to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

These are not simply words to memorize or recite at a meeting. They are commitments to live by every day.

Scouting Spirit is demonstrated when a Scout helps a fellow Scout, when a leader takes the time to mentor a young person, when a family lends a hand, and when we put the needs of others ahead of our own. It is seen in the small acts of kindness, the willingness to serve, the courage to do what is right, and the example we set for those around us.

As leaders, parents, and volunteers, we have an important responsibility. Our young people are watching what we do just as much as they are listening to what we say. When we demonstrate integrity, respect, accountability, and compassion, we show our Scouts what it truly means to live the Scout Oath and Law. When we encourage them to take those values beyond their unit meetings and into their schools, homes, and communities, we help develop the next generation of leaders.

The Pioneer Family Weekend Campout was a wonderful example of what can happen when our Scouting community comes together with a shared purpose. It reinforced the importance of providing opportunities for young people to learn, explore, challenge themselves, and grow alongside caring adults and supportive families.

As Chair of the Hunterdon Arrowhead District, I am proud of the commitment demonstrated by our units, leaders, and families. I encourage everyone to carry the enthusiasm and fellowship of this weekend forward throughout the year. Continue to invite families to experience Scouting, support our volunteers, serve our communities, and challenge our Scouts to lead by example.

Let us remember that the true measure of Scouting is not simply what we accomplish at camp or during a meeting. It is what our Scouts take with them when they return home and how they choose to live their lives.

Let us not simply talk about Scouting Spirit. Let us live it, demonstrate it, and put it into action every day.

Thank you to everyone who made our first Cub Scout Family Pioneer Family Weekend Campout such a success. Together, we are building stronger families, stronger leaders, and a stronger Scouting community throughout Hunterdon County.

Do a Good Turn Daily—and let your actions show the world what Scouting Spirit truly means.

Yours in Scouting,

Christopher J. Phelan

District Marketing & Communications

The District Marketing and Communications Committee launched efforts in the spring to raise the visibility of Scouting in Hunterdon County.

What we need from all of our units are photos and brief descriptions of events, activities, Courts of Honor, Eagle Projects etc. to share on the Scouting Hunterdon County facebook and Instagram pages.

We are still working to establish a central repository but for now photos and descriptions can be sent to Kristen Boyce at ringoes65treasurer@gmail.com.

As a reminder, anytime you post for scouting, please be sure to tag #ScoutingHunterdon to increase our reach. Our ultimate goal is to share the fun of scouting to those not involved and grow the scouting program in Hunterdon County.

We are in need of volunteers to assist with our efforts. Please join us October 27 at 6pm as we regroup and explore ways to further expand our marketing and communication reach. We will meet at the Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce 119 Main Street Flemington.

At the HAD District Committee Meeting this October we welcomed our new Council Executive John Gliot, who had a great discussion regarding his vision and plans for the Council moving forward.
