THE HUB DIRECTOR'S CORNER
On My Mind and From the Heart
I know I have shared before that I started with The HUB before there was a HUB as a volunteer. One of my very favorite things still to this day is to answer the phone or have a conversation with people who I come in contact with through The HUB. I remember answering the phone many years ago and listening to varying seniors requests and marveling sometimes at the simplicity of the requests that we get.

One gentleman called years ago and I still nearly 7 or 8 years later remember his call. He recently was widowed and he had surgery that required him to have some help getting medical equipment to safely navigate his home. While I had him on the phone I asked him if there was anything else that he needed before I dropped off his medical equipment at his home. He half laughingly said that he would sure love a home cooked meal. Well by the tone of voice I sensed that he needed that home cooked meal for his mental health as much as for his nutritional needs. I have a large family and we cook big meals, so I knew that I had some great leftovers in my refrigerator. I went home and packaged up a few home cooked meals and delivered them along with his medical needs to his home.

I remember his joy when he got the delivery of the food and the medical equipment. He called back and thanked me more than once. To me it was no big deal, something I would do for anyone who asked. I know from this past few years it is the simple things that we can miss the most. Going to see family, sharing a meal, can become a very challenging thing in the midst of this world we live in now. We at the HUB know how important it is for folks to receive a warm meal and to share it with others. There is something built into each of us that longs to share a meal with friends and family. Breaking bread around a table is a time to nourish your body and to help clear the clutter from your brain with people that care about you. That is why I am happy that we can provide a warm home cooked meal to those in the community at least once a week. As the holiday season nears with the start of fall, we have started the planning on our larger holiday meals.

We will once again be providing a warm Thanksgiving meal to those in the community, in both a drive thru, and inside seating fashion. It will be a time of celebration with friends and family a time to give people in the community the opportunity to enjoy a home cooked meal that they might not otherwise get. If you would like to be a part of warming the soul and providing a nourishing meal to the community please consider donating to help fund a meal, or bring a non-perishable item or two (canned soups and stews, canned fruit and vegetables, canned meat/fish, peanut butter) for our food pantry for the community. items can be dropped off at the front desk at The HUB or at The HUB Shop during business hours. And, as always, your cash donation is always welcome!
