Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Happy October!

We have so much to discover this month...in addition to a change of seasons and many pumpkins, we celebrate many amazing saints and Our Lady of the Rosary. There are only seven weeks left in Ordinary time. In the first week of October, we celebrate: St. Therese, the Holy Guardian Angels, St. Francis of Assisi, and St. Faustina. Look for more October Saints here. And find more ideas in "Liturgical Living for Busy Families".

In October we finish Ordinary Time for this Liturgical Year. This is the time that we grow and learn. What can you learn this month to grow closer to God? What can you do to help bring your family deeper in faith?

Please remember to pray for all those affected by Hurricane Helene and, our nation as we prepare for the upcoming election. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, Pray for us. Jesus, we trust in You!

Please let us know how we can better serve you and your parish as we carry out our mission of evangelization to help parishes bring people to an encounter with Christ and a deeper appreciation of the Catholic faith. (Contact us at family@diocesepb.org)

May God's Mercy and Peace be with you and your family,

Cathy, Deacon Louie, Beth, Liliana, Andy,

The story of Our Lady of the Rosary is based on the legend that Mary appeared to Saint Dominic and taught him to pray the rosary in the early 13th century:

The vision:

According to the story, Mary appeared to Dominic while he was struggling to preach in France and gave him the rosary as a tool to fight heretics.

The rosary's development:

The rosary is a combination of repetitive prayers and scriptural meditation that helps the practitioner contemplate the events of Jesus and Mary's lives. The word "rosary" comes from the Latin word rosarium, which means "rose garden".

The feast:

The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was originally called the Feast of Our Lady of Victory, which Pope Pius V established to thank God for the Christian victory over the Turks at Lepanto. Pope Gregory XIII changed the name to the Feast of the Holy Rosary in 1573, and Pope Clement XI extended it to the universal Church in 1716. The feast is now celebrated on October 7th.

God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before you as your children in thanksgiving for your loving care and protection. We ask that you keep us safe from all hurricanes and illnesses that may threaten us in the coming seasons. Protect us from all fear and anxiety and give us ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone have the power to command the sea, the wind, and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm, and safety. Father, we thank you in advance, for you are our only Refuge. We ask this through Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us.

Everyone Can Evangelize

We are all called to evangelize, and thanks to the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are well-equipped for this mission. It may not mean spreading the Gospel in a foreign land or going door-to-door with the Good News—and it may require overcoming some fears—but the Lord is asking each of us to step out of our comfort zone and evangelize one-on-one.

In this Year of Mission, Catholics across the U.S. are saying “yes” to a special form of heart-to-heart accompaniment called the Walk With One initiative.

SAINT OF THE MONTH

St. Francis of Assisi

This time of year, people in various places may notice something odd. A procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses, is led to churches for a special ceremony called the Blessing of Pets. This custom is conducted in remembrance of Saint Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures.

“For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one. So, they are no longer two but one. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate.”
