Dear Friends,

October was a beautiful month with the leaves on trees changing colors in the glow of the sun and our peace coaches circling up with people of all ages to teach peace.

I feel lots of hope hearing feedback from young people at program sites:

  • A kindergartner said, "I am going to put my stop sign up and say: I want to work it out."
  • A 10-year-old said, "I want to be a peace coach."
  • A high school student said, "It is not easy to be a peacemaker, but these tools are helping me."

Philip, one of our staff peace coaches, went with a delegation to Palestine to help with the olive harvest and plant seeds of peace. We are looking forward to sharing more about his trip in the coming months and encourage you to look through highlights from our programming in DMV from the past month included below!

As we like to cite from peacemaker Dag Hammarskjold, "For all that has been, thanks; to all that shall be, yes."

Peace and love,

MJ and Jerry Park

Making Personal Connections to Peace in Schools this Month!

We are progressing through our core curriculum with students at partner schools in D.C. and Virginia! Students have enjoyed drawing people and things that bring them peace and are starting to learn about one of our favorite peace practices — bucket filling!

When you do something nice for someone, you add drops into an imaginary peace bucket above their head! Try it out this week.

We have also introduced our curriculum to students at a partner school in South Sudan, who join students in Uganda for a virtual program on Friday mornings.

Expanded Partnership with Gonzaga College High School!

This fall, we are continuing to work with our neighbors at Gonzaga College High School! We welcomed students to the Peace Room for a service-learning day (pictured left) and joined a meeting Peace Club.

This month, we were also invited to visit all 10 sections of the freshman foundations class — that's 245 students! — for a series of lessons. We shared our peacemaking philosophy, what motivates us to work for peace, and the Wellness Wheel tool card.

Students shared peacemakers they look up to – both historical figures like Dr. King, Gandhi, and St. Ignatius of Loyola, but also personal influences like parents, grandparents, and mentors at school. We enjoyed discussing how each person can be a peacemaker in their time, place, and stage of life.

Finding Our Unique Voices at the Father McKenna Center

Twice a month at the Father McKenna Center, we lead art sessions for men to tap into their "childhood creative imagination," as one client shared this past month. The guys who join our sessions are coming to find out they each have a unique voice to share with our community.

David (pictured right with his collage) has joined our Peace Circle and art sessions for the last two months, incorporating our peace tools into his daily life as he waits patiently for new housing. He has gifted us with his joy, personal compliments, and deep faith.

"This program very therapeutic for me — to talk about my day and what's bringing me peace. I write down things during the day to bring into the Peace Circle. I think it is really cool."
