October is Down’s Syndrome Awareness Month and we are hosting lunchtime talks for health professionals to raise awareness and understanding about specific health conditions related to Down’s syndrome.


We are hosting two lunchtime talks with expert speakers joining us to share their knowledge and experience of working with and treating patients with Down’s syndrome.

 Dr Peter Gillett – Gut health in children and Adults with Down’s syndrome   


Thursday 5 October – 12.30 – 1pm


During this lunchtime talk, we will be joined by Dr Peter Gillet Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, Edinburgh.

Dr Gillet has done a vast amount of work with the Scottish Government, relevant charities and other working groups to improve diagnosis, ongoing management and knowledge of coeliac and other gut conditions. Dr Gillet also has close links with Down Syndrome Medical Intrest Group (DSMIG) in the UK.


Peter's presentation will detail the prevalence of coeliac disease in individuals with Down's syndrome, highlighting the history and evolution of guidance, and share some pragmatic ideas with you about how we approach screening for coeliac disease in individuals with Down's syndrome.

Dr Nashwa Matta – the Neonatal Pathway for Babies born with Down’s Syndrome 


Thursday 26 October – 12.30 – 1pm


Dr Nashwa Matta is a Retired Neonatologist and is an Honorary Clinical Senior lecturer at the University of Glasgow. She has over 20 years of experience working as a Neonatologist in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and has a clinic in community child health that has been running for the past 14 years.


Nashwa will talk about the Neonatal Pathway & Guidance for babies born with Down's syndrome that she authored for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Nashwa is also currently working with us at Down's Syndrome to develop this pathway into a national standard Pathway of Care for all Babies born with Down's syndrome in Scotland.

Each of these talks will be half an hour long, with a 20-minute presentation and time for your questions. The talks will take place over Zoom and are free to attend.
