Carolina Public Press Hosts Newsmaker Forums & Hunger Resource Fairs
Carolina Public Press, a North Carolina-based non-profit news organization, is spending this year traveling and listening and reporting on hunger across Western North Carolina. This is an effort to raise awareness about root causes of hunger as well as solutions being developed and realized in local communities. A part of their year-long work includes five Hunger Resource Fairs and Newsmaker Forums, two of which were hosted in collaboration with MANNA FoodBank partners in Yancey and Jackson County. The forum panelists included John Miller, Director of Reconciliation House in Burnsville, Paige Christie, Executive Director of The Community Table in Sylva, Emily Mitzel, Site Coordinator at Blue Ridge Health, and Hannah Randall, CEO of MANNA FoodBank. To learn more about the collaborative conversations happening across the region and see a full list of panelists, visit https://carolinapublicpress.org/cpp-events/ .
Partner Spotlight: Macon Program for Progress Pop-up Serves Almost 200 Families
On a warm fall day in Macon County, over 200 community members gathered at Robert C. Carpenter Community Building for a just-in-time pop-up food distribution hosted by Macon Program for Progress (MPP). MPP is a community action agency that offers a variety of services, including housing, child care, and job training support. In addition to the MANNA pop-up delivery, the space at the community building allowed for an extra truck load of TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program) product that included apples, plums, rice, and lentils. 527 individuals and 187 households were able to bring home fresh food.

Felicia Roberts of MPP noted “many new faces” she hadn’t seen before. ”As the people were exiting they were so thankful and appreciative,” she said, “and they asked me, ‘You will still have another one right? Because we depend on this and thank you so much.’”

Macon Program for Progress will continue to help serve the community with monthly mobile distributions.

Mobile Delivery Schedule
October-December 2019
REMINDERS: Before dialing up the driver, remember: Every time someone calls, they must pull off the road to answer the phone, causing additional delays. If you have any questions, contact our Warehouse Manager Lee Short at (828) 299-3663 x1260.

Please ask your volunteers to allow a 30 minute window before and after your expected MANNA delivery. Our drivers work very hard to arrive on time, but they may experience unforeseen setbacks while on the road. Giving them this window helps them to stay on track.
