October Masks: Halloween and Otherwise
October is one of my favorite months! But like everything else in 2020, it is different this year.
As a child, it meant:
· Halloween
· Candy, candy, and more candy!
· The World Series
· Football
As a young adult, it meant:
· National taco day (with delicious margaritas, of course!)
· Perfect golf weather
· Lots of business travel
· Fall Foliage
As an adult with young children, it means:
· My favorite season
· Halloween
· Fall foliage
· Choosing costumes
· Halloween
· Decorations
· How many pumpkins do we need?
· Will I ever play golf again?
· Did I mention Halloween?
· Lots of business travel
As an adult with children in October 2020, it means:
· What day is it?
· How am I going to balance work and home schooling?
· Will COVID ever end?
· Wake me up when the election is over!
· What will Halloween be like?
· Choosing costumes
· Decorations
· How many pumpkins do we need?
· Do I need a COVID mask inside my Halloween costume mask?
· Can we trick or treat?
· Can COVID be transmitted through candy?
· Pumpkin Spiced Latte (At least COVID cannot take that away!)
· Golf is out of the question.
In all seriousness, this year has been so bizarre…unlike any other in my lifetime and perhaps yours, too. Despite the difficulties the pandemic brings with it, I am truly thankful for the time I have been able to spend with my family during these challenging times.
I am also thankful for and miss our colleagues and clients who we typically meet with face-to-face because October is usually our busiest travel month. It is when we get to spend quality, in-person time together. Sadly, this is non-existent in 2020.
Yes, it is October, and a lot has changed. We worry about lost connections, strengthening connections and Internet connections. Words like clouds, cookie, cell, chat, bookmark, browser, BYOD, firewall and frames have new meaning.
I mean…let’s face it. Before March 2020, the word “zoom” made me think of a Batman comic book. Today, Zoom is a leading platform for providing education worldwide and has become our primary connection to clients and colleagues.
I sure do miss seeing all of you and doing one of the things we do best, which is attending conferences in person—unplugged and tuned in to the matters at hand. Unmasked!
