Carly Markesich

Carly Markesich founded Discover Gymnastics in 1999, and has been one of the leaders in the gymnastics industry in Houston ever since. Carly earned her B.A. in International Studies at the University of St. Thomas and is a graduate of Rice University's Leadership Institute for Nonprofit Executives.
Carly began gymnastics as a 12 year old. She fell in love with the sport while competing for her high school and a private gymnastics club she commuted an hour to get to. Nadia Comaneci and Olga Korbut were the gymnasts of the time, and Nadia became Carly's idol in gymnastics. After completing her competitive years in gymnastics, Carly always had a job coaching gymnastics in some way. After college and several years in the corporate world, Carly knew that gymnastics was what she really wanted to be doing.
With years of training in the business world and years of coaching experience, Carly wrote a business plan and gathered together $25,000 from personal savings, family and friends, and took a $25,000 microloan from the Council for Economic Development of Harris County (CEDHC). Starting from scratch, Carly launched her new gym with "guts and borrowed money" in 1999. The original location for Discover Gymnastics was off Old Katy Road between the Awty International School and the Edwards Marq *E Cinema. In 2003, Discover's home became the current location here in the Heights.
Now wrapping up its 19th year in business, and about to turn 20, Discover Gymnastics has become one of the largest and best gymnastics schools in the greater Houston metropolitan area. Carly is proud to offer programs that help with the physical development of children as young as 6 months. Discover Gymnastics has fantastic preschool and recreational programs for school age kids, and competitive teams that stand up with some of the best clubs in the country. Whatever the age, children in our programs have an opportunity to learn the life skills taught through our sport including: determination, resiliency, courage, self-esteem, work ethic, focus and more beyond that. Carly's focus has been to provide a facility that allows children to build strong minds and bodies through the discovery of sport.
In 2010, with the assistance of the founding Board of Directors, Carly began the Discover Fitness Foundation (DFF), a a 501c3 charity, to scholarship many more children than the gym could do on its own. The DFF mission is to create a continuum of services for children with special needs, children fighting obesity, and talented athletes that inspires youth to participate in recreational and competitive level gymnastics. The DFF serves nearly 200 children in four gymnastics clubs in Texas and one in Michigan. By 2020, we will have created a nationwide network of gymnastics clubs and local fundraising chapters to have eligible children enrolled in fitness and gymnastics programs across the United States.
Secondary to Carly's love of gymnastics, she also actively supports organizations that promote the welfare of women, children, animals and the environment. Outside of Carly's charity interests, she enjoys traveling the world, reading and meeting with good friends and family at all sorts of new restaurants. We are proud to have Carly leading the way with an enriching gymnastics environment for children and families in Houston.
