Tiegen Costa, Crescendo Music Teacher, Featured in Edmonton Journal. | |
|
Our very own Tiegen Costa hosted a show at the Yardbird Suite in Edmonton. Congratulations, Tiegen, on your Edmonton Journal article! (See below.)
Opportunity knocks
Seasoned legend, saxophonist P.J. Perry figures prominently in the mix but you can’t discount the inspiration and encouragement playing the venue packs for up-and-comers like guitarist Tiegen Costa, 23, whose quartet hits Thursday in an Emerging Artist showcase at 8 p.m.
“It’s the greatest room in Western Canada for jazz,” Costa allows. “It means the world, to be honest, because the names who have played there are just incredible, and when you see your local heroes playing there and then you’re playing that same stage, it’s just a really good feeling.”
He’s played various local clubs and four “virtual” gigs at the Yardbird through the pandemic but this is his first live-audience show with saxophonist Jacob Do, bassist Evan Klick and drummer Graeme Newburn keeping company.
Like many others in the local music community, Costa pursues a “jack of all trades” trajectory, trying to stay as versatile as he can be after finishing MacEwan’s jazz and contemporary music performance program a year back. As recently as last month he was hired to back up rapper Ardn at the Starlite Room and he was busy during jazz fest too, but you sense this quartet with some fave colleagues is the closest thing to fulfilling his musical high.
Drawing from blues and rock roots as a youngster, his music world expanded exponentially after hitting golden-era jazz guitar influences, the funk legacy of James Brown, and Kendrick Lamar. Now he’s preparing to plumb his own tunes, a pop-jazz adaptation and more as he works towards getting his first EP out.

Why Is Music Theory So Important?
“Do everything you can to learn your craft. Score student films for free, attend conferences, learn music theory – do anything and everything you can.” – John Keltonic
When learning an instrument, you have probably been encouraged to work on your music theory as well. Music theory is an incredibly important part of any music learning journey. Some call it the “grammar of music” because it provides the rules by which music works. Learning music theory will help a student understand the different written elements that make up a piece of music including; note reading, note values, time signatures, chord progressions, articulation, and much more. A holistic musical education should include theory each week because it will help a student to become a better musician!
