Hello Fall!

We are a month into fall and we are beyond grateful to hear the inspiring music throughout the halls of Crescendo. We hope you have started to find a comfortable back-to-school routine for your family that includes finding the time to practice your instrument and grow your talents as a musician!

Dean and I are thrilled to welcome a few new faces to our already diverse and talented team! New to our team this year are Daniel Jackson (teaching drums, guitar and ukulele), Eva Mackowska (teaching piano, guitar and voice), Janak Naidu (teaching piano), Tessa Ruberry (teaching guitar) and Thomas Shenher (teaching guitar). Each of these qualified individuals bring their own set of skills and abilities to the team, and we are delighted to have them join us this year. If you are interested, you can learn more about our staff team on our website.

We wish you all a wonderful fall and a lovely Thanksgiving weekend. Please note that the studio is closed Friday, October 7 to Monday, October 10.

In keeping with the Thanksgiving theme, we wish to tell you how thankful we are for each and every one of you, our valued students and families, and we thank you for the opportunity to bring music into your life and home!

Warm Regards,

TEACHER FEATURE

Taylor Price

Each month we like to share a video with you prepared by one of our talented Crescendo teachers. This month's Teacher Feature is Taylor Price.

Taylor has been teaching music for six years and has taught piano, voice, and musical theatre at Crescendo since 2018. She has also worked with local schools to help develop and lead drama and music workshops, as well as choreograph musicals.

Taylor has been playing piano for 23 years, sang in choir for 11 years, has taken many years of private instruction in both disciplines, and is working towards her Grade 10 RCM certification. She graduated from the Theatre Arts Intensive Diploma program at Grant MacEwan University where she learned about singing technique, choreography, theatre history, and performing.

Over the years, Taylor has also spent time working on other skills such as classical & jazz piano, chording, improvisation, songwriting, and playing guitar, clarinet, ukulele, and cello.

A few fun facts about Taylor are that she is bilingual en Francais and English, has a pet bunny named Morty, a pet fish named Beethoven and she loves musicals.

Enjoy this video of Taylor performing at Crescendo's 2021 Christmas Recital.

Tiegen Costa, Crescendo Music Teacher, Featured in Edmonton Journal.

Our very own Tiegen Costa hosted a show at the Yardbird Suite in Edmonton. Congratulations, Tiegen, on your Edmonton Journal article! (See below.)

Opportunity knocks

Seasoned legend, saxophonist P.J. Perry figures prominently in the mix but you can’t discount the inspiration and encouragement playing the venue packs for up-and-comers like guitarist Tiegen Costa, 23, whose quartet hits Thursday in an Emerging Artist showcase at 8 p.m.

“It’s the greatest room in Western Canada for jazz,” Costa allows. “It means the world, to be honest, because the names who have played there are just incredible, and when you see your local heroes playing there and then you’re playing that same stage, it’s just a really good feeling.”

He’s played various local clubs and four “virtual” gigs at the Yardbird through the pandemic but this is his first live-audience show with saxophonist Jacob Do, bassist Evan Klick and drummer Graeme Newburn keeping company.

Like many others in the local music community, Costa pursues a “jack of all trades” trajectory, trying to stay as versatile as he can be after finishing MacEwan’s jazz and contemporary music performance program a year back. As recently as last month he was hired to back up rapper Ardn at the Starlite Room and he was busy during jazz fest too, but you sense this quartet with some fave colleagues is the closest thing to fulfilling his musical high.

Drawing from blues and rock roots as a youngster, his music world expanded exponentially after hitting golden-era jazz guitar influences, the funk legacy of James Brown, and Kendrick Lamar. Now he’s preparing to plumb his own tunes, a pop-jazz adaptation and more as he works towards getting his first EP out.

Why Is Music Theory So Important?

“Do everything you can to learn your craft. Score student films for free, attend conferences, learn music theory – do anything and everything you can.”   – John Keltonic

When learning an instrument, you have probably been encouraged to work on your music theory as well. Music theory is an incredibly important part of any music learning journey. Some call it the “grammar of music” because it provides the rules by which music works. Learning music theory will help a student understand the different written elements that make up a piece of music including; note reading, note values, time signatures, chord progressions, articulation, and much more. A holistic musical education should include theory each week because it will help a student to become a better musician!
