Immigration to the US by people seeking asylum is increasing, but our methods for providing safety for migrating people have not yet adapted to this increasing need. Whenever people travel from one community to another, there is a concern about the spread of infections.

ο»ΏIn this talk, Dr. Amir Mohareb will discuss how perceptions of infection can impact immigration, and how we can humanely and safely mitigate infection risks among migrating people. Dr. Amir Mohareb is an Infectious Diseases physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. His work focuses on reducing the risk of infections in people who are migrating and forcibly displaced from their home countries.

The model fosters healing among the person who caused harm, the person who experienced harm, and the broader community. During this event, the panelists will examine the ways in which this practice is being considered, implemented, and championed in Philadelphia.

In Philadelphia, New Model Dress Code Language Protects Student Rights

Education Law Center

The School District of Philadelphia has made significant, positive changes to its 2024-25 districtwide dress code. The code now emphasizes that β€œStudents have the right to dress in a manner that celebrates their racial, cultural, religious, and gender identities, is reflective of their gender expression (including gender neutrality) and allows them to focus on their academic, social and emotional growth.”

As the Philadelphia Inquirer reports, the new policy includes clear language affirming protective hairstyles β€” β€œbraids, locs, puffs, afros, twists, wigs, including styles with elements such as headbands, head wraps, bonnets, barrettes or beads.” And it notes that hair discrimination β€” which is often practiced against these practical and culturally significant styles β€” is illegal racial discrimination: β€œStudents will not be discriminated against on the basis of their hair texture.”

ELC is working to uplift this model policy in hopes that other school districts will incorporate similarly affirming language into their dress codes.

Your Way Home

Semi-Annual Racial Equity Report

Your Way Home has completed its semi-annual racial equity report. The main objective of this study was to pinpoint disparities within the Your Way Home Continuum of Care homeless response system and suggest improvements in service delivery to better serve Montgomery County residents.

Overall, there are notable racial disparities in those entering the homeless population of Montgomery County, reflecting national trends. For instance, while Black and African American individuals constitute 9% of the general population and 19% of the population in poverty, they make up 40% of the homeless population according to the 2022 Point-in-Time Count. The CoC has also seen an increase in households with children experiencing homelessness for the first time.

"This research is another reminder that our work is not done. Your Way Home has made improvements to better serve historically marginalized populations, including by developing new prioritization procedures, targeting Housing Choice Voucher preferences to households with children, and investing in eviction prevention programs that data shows primarily benefit female-led and Black-led households. Yet the systemic drivers of racism and ableism persist, and we are still grappling with the rippling effects of historic redlining on the socioeconomic landscape. We are grateful and humbled to be a part of this ongoing work."

National Alliance Snapshot of Child Homelessness

A new data snapshot released by the National Alliance to End Homelessness provides key data on child homelessness across the United States. As children nationwide return to school, a recent report from the Alliance’s Homelessness Research Institute reveals that during the 2021-2022 school year, the number of kids facing homelessness exceeded the total child population of 28 states combined. More than Ever, We Need to Belong: Part 1, Lakeside Blog

By: Diane Wagenhals

Director Emeritus, Lakeside Global Institute

So, how prevalent is the need-to-belong issue? Here is some research: the American Psychiatric Association (APA) finds that, β€œearly in 2024, 30% of adults say they have experienced feelings of loneliness at least once a week over the past year, while 10% say they are lonely every day. Younger people were more likely to experience these feelings, with 30% of Americans aged 18-34 saying they were lonely every day or several times a week, and single adults are nearly twice as likely as married adults to say they have been lonely on a weekly basis over the past year (39% vs. 22%).”

A May 2024 article from WGBH written by Diego Lopez and Arun Rath provides the following information: β€œPublic health officials from the Surgeon General on down agree: the United States is facing an epidemic of loneliness. Half of the country's adults report struggling with feelings of loneliness, and for Gen Z, that feeling of isolation is hitting particularly hard. About 73% of 16- to 24-year-olds say they struggle with it, and it's not just because of the pandemic. Loneliness levels, especially for young men, have gone up every year between 1976 and 2019. It doesn't just keep people from doing their best or feeling their best, loneliness can take a serious toll on one's physical health, making it more important than ever to address this epidemic.”
