TRAVEL CAMP TOILETS OPEN

Sometimes small things are really big things. Your reporter and a few EG residents gathered with county representatives and staff and folks from MORCA (Monterey Off Road Cycling Association) to officially open the Travel Camp toilets. As Parks Commissioner Kelly Stracke said "toilets aren't glamorous, but they're one of the clearest signs of a caring, connected community." Sup Root Askew recognized all the groups that made this project possible, including county staff, MORCA and the Monterey County Chamber of Commerce. MORCA President Lisa Birch said this shows "slow but steady progress that benefits the next generation." (learn more about MORCA at MORCA.org) Lisa was proved correct when a small girl snuck into the restroom while the ceremony was going on, proving how important the new facilities are.

The two toilets will be open from 8:00am to dusk seven days a week. The only time they'll be closed is during large events; event organizers are required to provide porta-potties for participants. They will be maintained by county Parks and Rec staff.

The Travel Camp is not a part of EG although it is our next door neighbor. In case you were wondering, no EG Mello-Roos funds or EG-specific funds were used for construction or maintenance.

Library Update

There's a lot of work between the idea for a book and its publication. Our library is in the "editing" part of the process - we can't see it but there is work going on behind the scenes.

Want to support all libraries in Monterey County while we're waiting for shovels to hit the dirt? Attend the MCFL Foundation's Words and Wine for light bites, author talks and a silent auction on Nov 18, 1-4pm in Carmel Valley, words-and-wine.

We also need people-power to get our library off to the best start, including meeting with other Friends groups who have lots of ideas about the good things a Friends group can do - email friendsofeglibrary@gmail.com to get involved!

What's up with the Town Center?

The county hired an independent firm to look at parking for the planned Town Center and Phase 4. Here are two draft maps the developer created. The first shows all the parking places (green dots) along EG streets. The second one shows that for the 66 apartments over the Town Center there will be one space per unit and 34 others to be shared between tenants and customers at the Town Center.

A little exercise: put your finger on one of the new units - orange, blue, pink, or red (Town Center tenant). If you lived there, where would you park the extra car, where would your guests park? Next step: put your finger on the red Town Center: if you were a customer where would you park, or if you were a business owner, where would your customers park?

Next read the ideas for signs in the parking lot - will those work?

Bulletin Board

There's a new community bulletin board at Lincoln Park, thanks to our EG Kiwanis group. Anyone can post information about upcoming events. Volunteers will keep track of items and remove them after the event or after they've been up for a month or so. It's pretty popular already - come see what's up in EG!

Ways to Get Involved

  • "Adopt a Road" help clean InterGarrison - Vests and trash grabbers provided. Contact Kiwanis of EG for more information
  • Monday Trivia - second Monday of each month, 6pm at English Ales
  • Broom Bashing is ongoing. If you'd like to get some exercise and help our native plants, HERE is the link
