October News

Dear CRC,

I loved this photo sent to me from our Food and Nutrition Center earlier this month, and thought it deserved an equally amazing caption.

"CRC Volunteers Do Gourd Work."

"CRC Gives the Community Pumpkin to Talk About."

Or, "CRC's Volunteers are Smashing It This Fall!"

Life can be heavy (no pun intended this time). The nightly news can feel bleak. Volunteer work at a social service agency like Community Resource Center is meaningful but also challenging. Providing compassionate service to those who may be experiencing their worst day, can take its toll.

As we enter into the Fall season, take heart: You are making a difference!

I was recently up at Palomar Mountain enjoying the crisp air, watching squirrels scurry up tree trunks and dodging falling acorns. It was just what I needed, and I came down the mountain refreshed. I hope each of you can find your own means of rest, which in turn can prevent burn-out as you continue to serve others. And I'd like to encourage you to find levity where you can, and stay hydrated (it is cold and flu season after all).

We are grateful to each of you and the work you do. Now go enjoy this gourd-geous day, grab a pumpkin spice latte, and read on to see what volunteers have been up to this month!

Warmly,

Sara Rosenbaum, CVA
CRC Volunteer Manager

LEARN MORE!

St. Mark Lutheran Provides Ongoing Support

St. Mark Lutheran church in Encinitas has a long history of support for Community Resource Center. On Sunday, October 8th, they sent a team in to do their yearly deep clean of the Food and Nutrition Center, inside and out.

Windows, walls, floors, refrigerators and shelves, as well as the outside sidewalks were left sparkling clean. It was great to see all ages coming out to serve the community. Says team leader Dave Kendall, " We all had fun helping out the CRC!"

In addition, St. Mark's held a food drive for much needed items and sorted them into crates on their church site, saving our staff and volunteers time.

Thank you!

Volunteer Spotlights

Youth Advisory Board

CRC's Youth Advisory Board continues to work behind the scenes! Tasked with finding ways to get our message out to youth, they have been creating posters and tik tok videos, planning assemblies and personal care drives, and more.

Pictured: YAB member Mattea Day, meeting with San Marcos Resale Store Manager Mary Cunningham, to discuss ways to get more student volunteers at that store location. Our young philanthropists and volunteers are a key part of making our community a better place. Thank you!

San Dieguito Academy Water Polo

The SDA boy's water polo team is a repeat supporter of CRC. They have come out to volunteer at our Postal Food Drive event, our Holiday Baskets event, and this past Saturday, signed on to deep clean our Food and Nutrition Center. These young men bring a great attitude, high energy and willingness to work hard to their volunteer roles. When asked why they came out to volunteer this past weekend, they said it was a great team-bonding experience and reminder that there are people who need help in our community. And, it was never boring because they kept busy the entire time!

More photos from the FNC deep clean can be found on our social media pages.

Capital Campaign Support

CRC continues to provide education on our upcoming Capital Campaign via smaller in-home meetings. These events require help to set up, clean up and run. Thank you to volunteers Melanie Dowd and Jocelyn Munden (YAB) for your support at the October events!

Volunteers of the Month

Gayle Patterson (Right) with Nominating staff Shakira Williams

Mary Jo Duvall (Right) with volunteers Jennifer Kinzelberg and Carole Bloom

Congratulations to CRC's Volunteers of the Month: Mary Jo Duvall and Gayle Patterson

Mary Jo and Gayle were instrumental this month in supporting our Holiday Baskets registration process. Data and Evaluation Manager, Shakira Williams, who nominated the two of them writes: "The volunteer position for Holiday Baskets Registration Team Captain is new this year, and both answered the call when asked. After a brief training, Mary Jo and Gayle took charge of the registration team and the new registration process. They trained the volunteers and oversaw 3 weeks of open enrollment, registering 144 households. This is my 8th Holiday Baskets registration season and the first that I was allowed to primarily focus on quarterly reporting!"

Thank you both for your hard work!
