Enter into our pumpkin decorating contest, solve a mystery with Snoopy, and even trick-or-treat this October at the library!

We are open at our normal hours and for our normal services.
For those who would prefer contactless service, we are continuing to offer optional curbside pick up - just call us at (920) 398-3434 to schedule a pick- up time.

Masks are now optional. The library will continue with its escalated cleaning regimen. Patrons are encouraged to stay six feet apart and practice frequent hand-washing.

Pumpkin Crate

Available starting at 12:00 pm, Thursday, October 7

Our first October Take & Make Craft Kit will be available starting at 12:00 pm on Thursday, October 7! It will have all the supplies and instructions for a small "Pumpkin Crate" - so adorable and easy to make! Only $6 per kit to cover the cost of supplies.

Cooking Up Science with 4-H: Make eggs float and raisins dance!
Register in advance

This workshop involves exploring basic biology, chemistry, and physics using common items from the kitchen! This program is designed for youth in grades 3-6.

Make raisins dance, get a straw through a potato and learn how eggs float!

"Play & Learn" comes to the library!

On Wednesday, October 13 and October 27, “Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin” will move their “Play & Learn at the Park” indoors, partnering with the library at 10:00 am for Story Time, and then again at 11:00 am to create joyful opportunities for families to play together. Storytime is geared towards ages preschool through early elementary. Play & Learn is geared towards ages birth – 6.

Pajama Story Time

Pumpkin Decorating Contest
Starts Saturday, October 16
Starting Saturday, October 16, you can pick up a pumpkin at the library (until supplies are out) to take home and decorate. Then, return your pumpkin by Monday, Oct. 25 to be entered into our pumpkin decorating contest. From Monday, Oct. 25 - Saturday, Oct. 30, the pumpkins will be on display in the library, while the public gets to vote for the their favorites. Three winners will be selected and will receive $10 cash. Winners will be notified Monday, November 1st.

It's the Great Pumpkin Mystery, Charlie Brown!

Monday, Oct. 25 - Saturday, Oct. 30

Starting Monday October 25 and running through Saturday, October 30th, bring the family down to the library to find the “Great Pumpkin”! Help Linus find the Great Pumpkin by solving different puzzles (elementary aged friendly) and scavenger hunts around the library. Successful sleuths will earn a treat bag!

November Book Club Selection: "Sworn to Silence" by Linda Castillo
Our Markesan Library Book Club is coming back on Thursday, November 4 at 6:00 pm! We already have a special display with our pick for November, "Sworn to Silence" by Linda Castillo! We also have large print and CD-audiobook copies available.


"Sworn to Silence" by Linda Castillo is the first novel in a series following Kate Burkholder. A series of brutal murders terrorized the peaceful town of Painters Mill, Ohio, a community of Amish and English residents. Sixteen years later, Kate Burkholder returns as chief of police, and must chase down the killer before they strike again using her Amish roots and years of law enforcement experience.

Every Wednesday at 10:00 am, join us for stories, songs, surprises and friends. Geared towards preschool to early elementary. This October is going to be scary fun! We have stories on unicorns & dragons, autumn leaves, and pumpkins, and of course Halloween. We can't wait to see you there!
Online Reading Challenges!
Try one of our 2 fun online challenges -- earn small prizes, enter raffles, and discover great resources along the way! Raffle drawing for 100 Books Before College will happen on June 1, 2022.

How to participate:
The challenges will take place completely online and readers can access them at markesanlibrary.beanstack.org. Participants can also download the Beanstack app and search for Markesan Library to play

100 Books Before College (ages 12-19): 100 Books before College dares readers 12-19 yrs. to read 100 books before they graduate. Small incentives we be awarded and at every 10 books read, participants earn tickets to enter into a prize raffle of either a $25 Ted’s Piggly Wiggly Gift Card or $10 gas station cards. At 50 books read, participants earn a book to be purchased in their honor for the library’s collection by an author or genre of their choice. The library will put that participants name in recognition inside the book and the reader will get the first checkout. At 100 books read, participants will receive a book to keep. The raffle portion of this challenge will be drawn on June 1, 2022 and then renew with prizes for participants still working on their goals.
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten (birth to 5 years old): This challenge is is a fun, exciting, and free way to start your child on the path to success! Any child ages birth to five years can participate. Each time you read 100 books, bring your reading record to the library to receive a special reward. At 1,000 books read, come celebrate at the library, see your child’s name placed on the 1,000 Book Wall of Fame, and receive a free book. Pick up a log sheet at the library, or download one by clicking here to get started!
