EP Corner:
Hurricane Helene ~ Pray, Provide, and be Present
The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid? ~ Psalm 27:1
In this season of hurricanes, loss, damage to places we love, a chemical explosion, it is easy to be overwhelmed. In the midst of all this, the Church has stepped up to offer God’s presence to our weary world. We offer thanks for our friends at the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance who are working to care for the needs of those in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Several congregations around our presbytery have been working to provide support as well. We invite you to care for our friends and siblings in Christ in the following ways:
1. Pray – Pray for the victims of this storm and encourage others to join you. Pray for those who are actively suffering, for first responders who have been working tirelessly over the last week, and for all who are responding to the needs around them.
2. Provide – We encourage you to act with generosity by giving in a few of the following ways:
a. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA): PDA is in communication with all affected presbyteries across our region and National VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) to share information and coordinate resources as damage is assessed. You can learn more about these efforts and donate to this work.
b. Montreat: For many of us in this presbytery, Montreat holds a special place in our hearts. Contribute to the Montreat Hurricane Helene Restoration Fund.
c. North Carolina: The State of North Carolina has created the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund to assist with the unmet needs of hurricane victims.
3. Be Present – In this season, we invite you to find ways to be present with those who are suffering.
a. Look for local church efforts to collect donation items and work with service teams who are trained to respond at this stage of disaster. We have created a page on the presbytery website at www.atlpcusa.org/hurricane-helene that will be updated as we learn of additional efforts, and you are encouraged to use the Greater Atlanta Presbytery Crowdsourcing group on Facebook to share your congregation’s response.
b. Connect with local people who have ties to areas of devastation and support their needs.
c. Most of all, be mindful of what you can and cannot do in this season. Care for yourself and always remember that the Lord is our light and our salvation.
We are also struck in these days at the recent death of our friend and colleague the Rev. Dr. Richard Allen Farmer. Rev. Farmer retired from service as pastor at Crossroads Presbyterian Church at the end of 2023, but he was a dear and beloved presence in our presbytery. Click here for more information on celebrating his life, available from the Pastor-to-Pastor team.

Upcoming Fall Stated Meeting - November 9
by C. Anderson James, Stated Clerk
|
The Fall Stated Meeting of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta will be held on Saturday, November 9, from 9:00am until 3:00pm at Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church in Sandy Springs. This message contains many important details about the meeting—please read it carefully. Pastors, please share it with your clerk of session and elected ruling elder commissioners.
Format: Upon the decision of the presbytery’s Council, this meeting will be held fully in-person. A livestream will be available of the afternoon portion of the meeting. The meeting is expected to continue after lunch, so a meal will be available to those who make a reservation as part of their pre-registration for the meeting.
Theme, Worship, and Business: Our theme for 2024 is Finding Meaning, Inside and Out. At this meeting, we will be exploring the virtues of integrity and kenosis that mark thriving congregations. Worship will also include the annual celebration of the lives of those ministers and ruling elders across the Presbytery who have died in the last year.
This meeting will feature an hour docketed for table conversations about the mission and ministry of the Presbytery. These conversations will serve as the kickoff for several opportunities over the next several months to contribute to a broader process of discernment about the future of the Presbytery.
In other business for this meeting, we will vote on a proposed update to the Presbytery’s Manual of Operations, hear stories about the work of the Presbytery and its New Church Development Commission, examine persons for service in the church, and elect members to serve on the Presbytery’s committees and commissions for 2025 and beyond.
The commissioner handbook with the full business for the meeting will be available on the Presbytery website by Friday, October 25.
Pre-Registration for the Meeting, Lunch, and Childcare: Online pre-registration is strongly encouraged by the deadline of Sunday, November 3 so that our hosts can be prepared to welcome us and other arrangements can be made to support the meeting. Lunch reservations and payments can be made in advance through the online pre-registration process. Childcare needs can also be communicated in that system. Pre-registration is available at www.atlpcusa.org/statedmeetings.
Health and Safety: We encourage all attendees to use the time between now and the meeting to get current with covid and other vaccinations, and those who do not feel well on the day of the meeting should stay home and watch the livestream of the meeting. All are welcome to wear a mask throughout the meeting if they feel more comfortable doing so.
Pastors and clerks of session, please share this information with your ruling elder commissioners now so that they can register by the November 3 deadline.
If you have any questions about the meeting, contact Stated Clerk Andy James at cajames@atlpcusa.org. We look forward to seeing you on November 9!

On behalf of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta staff and presbytery at large, we want to offer our gratitude and appreciation for our minister members. We give thanks for the ways in which you love your families, serve the church, and care for those around you. Remember, you are loved for who you are and not simply for what you do. We love you, we honor you, and we thank God for you. | |
