It's wonderful to see how well the new students have adjusted to college life, and part of that is due to the returning students, and faculty, welcoming them into the family here at Foster.
The music students are very busy with classes, rehearsals, personal practice time, and performances. I admire each and every one of them for their hard work and dedication. And that's what it takes to be a success as a music major.
Carol and I do our best to help keep them on track with answers to questions, and daily needs here in the office. And we truly enjoy our jobs!
Many of us have attended the recitals thus far, and we sure have some very talented students here at EKU School of Music! Join us for one of the upcoming recitals and see for your self.
Sincerely,
Pam Perry Combs

Music & Science Unite!
EKU's newly restructured College of Science commissioned Dr. Richard Byrd, Professor of Music Theory & Composition, to compose a fanfare for the opening ceremony of Phase 2 of the New Science Building. Dr. Byrd's composition is titled "Emergence Fanfare for Brass Quintet." The title
reflects a twofold meaning and reference to both music and science as a process of coming into being or of becoming important or prominent and a phenomenon whereby larger entities arise through interactions among smaller or simpler entities. Replete with traditional fanfare figures, rhythmic ostinati, and majestic melodic writing, Emergence Fanfare captures the glory and excitement of new beginnings and boundless possibilities.
On September 15 in
her introduction of the world premiere of this work, Kristi Middleton, EKU Communications Department's Chief External Affairs officer, expressed what a momentous event this was, not only for the grand opening of the long awaited new science building, but also because this was the first time
in all of EKU's history of opening ceremonies where a music composition was specifically commissioned for the occasion. Pictured are Dr. Byrd and Founding Dean of the new College of Science, Dr. Tom Otieno; and the brass quintet performers comprised of EKU School of Music faculty Dr. Richard Byrd, Dr. Mick Sehmann, Dr. Nate Siler, Mr. Jim Willett, and EKU senior music education major Tanner Hutchins.

EKU School of Music Shines at Fort Harrod Jazz Festival!
Both EKU students and faculty were featured among the 16 juried jazz
ens
embles at the annual Fort Harrod Jazz Festival September 16 & 17 at the Old Fort Harrod State Park in Harrodsburg, Kentucky.
The EKU Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Larry Nelson performed Sunday. Later that day both Dr. Nelson and EKU School of Music colleagues, Dr. Richard Byrd and Dr. Joseph Carucci, were featured in the DiMartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra. This concert was a tribute to the band leader, Vincent DiMartino, who not only directed the UK jazz ensemble when Dr. Byrd was a graduate student at UK, but also has given numerous masterclasses at EKU over the past several years. Both Dr. Byrd and Dr. Nelson were also featured in jazz combos earlier in the festival as Dr. Byrd played with Miss Direction and Dr. Nelson played with The Jazz Collective. Pictured are the EKU Jazz Ensemble, the DiMartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra, Miss Direction, & the Jazz Collective.

Sylvia Thereza
Special Piano concert
Born on 3 January 1981 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Sylvia Thereza's artistry has been widely recognized by both the general public and music critics as well as by musicians such as Maria João Pires, Nelson Freire, and Teresa Berganza, among others. Thereza advocates a way of experiencing art in which generosity plays a role of utmost importance and where the artistic experience also performs a mission of social service. This philosophy has led her to devote her time to performing in both the most prestigious theaters as well as in some of the world's most disadvantaged communities. Sylvia has been performing since the age of six as a soloist, chamber musician and recitalist all over her native Brazil as well as in Japan, the US, Israel, Russia, France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, and Serbia.

The
EKU CELLO STUDIO
visited Lexington Traditional Magnet School, Bryan Station Middle School, and George Rogers Clark High School on Sept 20.
They performed for the orchestra and band students, taught sectionals, and fielded tough questions from these shrewd kids!
It was a great opportunity to promote the EKU SOM in our community!
