Celebrating Building Hope

We are incredibly grateful for this year’s BUILDING HOPE: An Evening for Affordable Housing, hosted at The Radical Hotel in Asheville’s River Arts District for a special “RAD edition”. Thank you to everyone who attended! Guests heard powerful stories of resilience and how your support helps build homes, neighborhoods, and thriving communities, especially as we continue long-term recovery one year after Tropical Storm Helene. Stories like those of Erin, Jessie, Judi, Ricardo, and Steve remind us of the strength it takes to rebuild, and that having a safe, stable home matters more than ever.

“Everybody deserves a place to call home. It’s a place to call your own. It’s a place to feel safe. It’s a place to feel secure. It’s a place to make memories. It’s your home.”

–Steve J. EHR Client

We’re proud to share our first-ever 2024 Annual Report! This report celebrates the people, partnerships, and progress that continue to make affordable housing possible across Western North Carolina. From new homes and groundbreakings for affordable rentals to stories of hope and resilience, this report reflects the impact we’ve all built together in 2024!

For 17 years, Kelly Nossiter has been at the heart of MHOs' mission to expand homeownership opportunities across Western North Carolina. Since joining MHO in 2008, she has helped more than 300 families achieve the dream of buying their first home and has played a key role in transforming MHO's Downpayment Assistance (DPA) program into the vital resource it is today! As Kelly departs MHO for new adventures, we take a minute to honor the legacy she built at MHO.

MHO is pleased to announce a $100,000 unrestricted grant from NeighborWorks America to support affordable housing and community development across Western North Carolina. This new funding builds on a $175,000 disaster relief award from November 2024, demonstrating NeighborWorks’ strong support for the region’s recovery from Tropical Storm Helene. Together, these grants help MHO strengthen community resilience, preserve and develop affordable housing, and advance locally driven solutions that support stability and growth for residents!

MHO was recently awarded an additional $200,000 grant, bringing the total to $468,000, from the SOULSHINE Concert Fund to support housing recovery following Tropical Storm Helene! These funds will help expand MHO’s Essential Home Repair (EHR) program, providing critical repairs that help keep vulnerable homeowners safe, stable, and housed. The SOULSHINE Fund was created through a benefit concert led by the Dave Matthews Band at Madison Square Garden in November 2024, raising over $4.5 million for storm recovery efforts. Huge thanks to the SOULSHINE Concert Fund and the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation for continuing to invest in communities rebuilding after the storm!

TD Bank and MHO teamed up last Tuesday, October 21st, to plant 30 new trees at MHO’s Spring Garden neighborhood in Candler! As part of the 2025 TD Tree Days program and supported by the Arbor Day Foundation, TD Tree Days brings together volunteers to enhance outdoor spaces and foster healthier, greener communities. The event was originally postponed because of Tropical Storm Helene, but a year later, we were able to return and plant trees that helped celebrate the completion of MHO’s 12-home Self-Help neighborhood. This partnership highlights how collaboration and community effort can strengthen both the environment and the neighborhoods we call home. Many thanks to the volunteers from TD Bank for making this possible!
